I've driven plenty in PA/NY/NJ. From what I've seen, these transplants were probably poor drivers before they got here! Though, they can probably handle the snow better than the guys from SoCal so I thank them for that!

yoyo sup guys i just moved into NoVa myself from NY/NJ, and i love it. i dont know what defense was talkin about. if anyplace is full of snobs its nyc. And the diversity here is a pleasant relief. it's not nearly as southern and rural as i was afraid of. (stafford is pushing it, that's where i work), but i live farther up north, and its fine.

the job market is great, unemployment is low, people keep saying "what recession?". For the record, I just moved away from a town in NY where the entire mall is shutting down, and my own parents can't find work after being established for decades in their locale.

i dunno, just wanted to contribute.

Amen to that! Usually when people move to an area it is common to hear complaining about the drivers, but here in DC it's true! The typical 10 over the limit doesn't apply here, and it's an absolute nightmare when it snows. I'm originally from Rochester NY and it drives me nuts the way people drive down here. I once saw a Honda (my least favorite car) with an MIT sticker doing 10 to 20 under in the left lane of the GW parkway on a clear morning. Smart enough to go to MIT but what a dumbass when it came to driving!

As far as living in the area, I like it and find that most people can be selfish and in their own world until you get a chance to talk to them, then they can be friendly. Only a small percentage of people try to go out of their way to impress and you just have to laugh at them. Who cares what they drive or what they wear? Would you want to be friends with those people anyways? Go to meetup dot com and find a club or two to join. I did that and met some really cool people. You'd be surprised how many people think like you.

I found out in college that Virginians have a real problem with merging. Instead of slowing a bit and going in after about every other car they tend to slam on their brakes and almost stop. Some areas don't have large merge areas, so in those cases it's understandable if you need to stop, but sometimes you've got a huge lane in front of you and they just screech to a halt and wait. I found it funny since there are so many highways around here you'd think they'd get it down.

I also found out that if you go a little further south (i.e. Fredericksburg) the other drivers actually back off when you put your blinker on to change lanes. That was a new phenomenon for me!

This . . . is the one maneuver I've seen in VA that really galls me. For the life of me, I cannot understand why anyone would come to a complete halt in the middle of the road. It just made me gasp when I saw this for the first time . . . .

Speaking of terrible Virginian drivers, what is up with people on narrow Route 7 between Reston and McLean habitually driving more slowly in the left-hand lane (passing lane) than the right-hand lane? I can't tell you how many times I've been forced to tailgate people just dawdling along doing 40 in a 55 zone in the left-hand lane as some Tyson's business executive on his cell phone in his Suburban comes right up my own rear-end and tries to force ME to force the dawdler to move over. Eventually aforementioned Suburban driver will gun it into the right lane (no blinker) and then cut off the dawdler (no blinker again).

I don't know what's in the water in McLean in particular, but the folks who turn left to head up to Lewinsville Road in the mornings from Route 7 Eastbound are especially notorious for being terrible drivers. Nine out of ten of these "dawdlers" I follow each and every morning on my commutes inevitably pull over into the Lewinsville Road turn lane. Folks, I realize that just because it says "55" doesn't mean you have to DO "55," but if you plan on driving 40 get the f$&%^ out of the passing lane before you cause a road-rage-related accident! Some of us have stressful enough commutes to jobs where they're undervalued and underpaid and don't want to end up behind some latte-sipping idiot doing 15 under the speed limit in the left-hand lane because they are too distracted texting to even notice how slowly they're going.

For that matter the folks on Baron Cameron Avenue are just as bad with this, and I've had my fair share of run-ins with these left-lane-lolly-gaggers on 7100 as well. Is there just something "different" about people here? What gives?!
