People have been talking about him coming to Philly since his debut in the majors. This is nothing new.

It will be a great season. The pitchers showed progress last year and deserve to have confidence shown in them to continue. Perhaps someone will flake out, and there will be injuries but someone from the Minors will step in and do well. Also there is no doubt by mid season they'll pick up a lefthander in a trade.

I hope you're right, but I don't want the city to be disappointed if success isn't immediate. We should be in the playoff hunt this year, but if we miss-out, I don't want people to fall off the bandwagon.

We shouldn't be peaking for a few more years - the window probably closes with Nola's contract, which is through 2022 with a club-option for 2023.

Why does Kapler want to bat Hernandez leadoff when he has Segura?

I would also guess a lot of people who are fans of National League teams (other than Philly) don't know what Mike Trout looks like. He doesn't market himself and he's the best player in baseball and has been for years. That Harper chose to spend the rest of his career here, and raise his family here, speaks volumes. And he's only 26 years old, just entering the prime of his career.

His relatively low AAV gives the team flexibility to sign other top players and he has made it known that he wants to recruit. I thought the idea of Trout coming home to play here in a couple of years was just a ridiculous fantasy, but now I don't know. This team could well end up being the Golden State Warriors of baseball, and the sport doesn't have a hard salary cap!

This is an exciting time to be a Philadelphia sports fan.
If you want to know what Mike Trout looks like, watch an Eagles game. He's there as often as he can be (for all games after baseball ends) and is always pointed out. If the Phillies sign him, the Harper welcome will pale in comparison.

Switch hitter who walks a lot (K's a lot too, though).
I'd rather bat Segura first, then Hernandez, and let McCutchen bat 6th behind Realmuto.
It's a flexible lineup for sure.

Nice to have good problems again, isn't it?

Yes it is! But I have faith in Kapler that he can mess it up.

Anyway, yes, Hernandez can switch hit and draw a walk, but the problem is: he's just not good. I prefer to bat him eighth and let the better hitters (Segura, McCutcheon) bat one, two. McCutcheon walks a lot and Ks a lot, too, but I'd bet he's a better baserunner than Hernandez (and he's probably more likely to drive a run in).
Do RBI still matter in today's game?

This article bizarrely says Hernandez should bat first because he has a high top speed: Will Phillies go after another starting pitcher? Beat reporter Todd Zolecki answers fans' questions
Quote:
It sounds like Cesar Hernandez will be the Phillies’ leadoff man, assuming he is ready to play by Opening Day. Hernandez has not appeared in a game since Feb. 25 because of a strained right hip flexor, but Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said recently he could play in a Grapefruit League game in about a week. Kapler likes Hernandez in the top spot because he is a high on-base percentage guy who can run (sprint speed of 29.2 feet per second ranked 39th out of 549 players last season).
There is something to be said for a leadoff guy getting on base, and then advancing two bases on a single.

Personally, I like Odubel leading off. I know that's probably not Sabremetrics-friendly, but he seems to play a lot better when he's leading off, like he thrives in that role.

Odubel
Segura
McCutcheon
Harper
Hoskins
Realmuto
Franco
Hernandez

When Odubel goes into his inevitable slump, you can push everyone up one and move him down to 7 (or put Williams in at 7).

I thought the idea behind analytics was to get your best hitters up the most times.

I'm not a big Hernandez fan, I'd like to see them give Scott Kingery a shot to start at second. Let's see what we have with him already ...
