If those solders want to take a vacation, they have to pay their way back to the US and take a 20 hour flight. Plus they only get 30 days per year off although they can roll it over to the next year. They don't get weekends off either and most likely work at least 12 hours a day, seven days a week. (Some do get days off now and then).

So no, I don't appreciate the Commander In-Chief enjoying so much leisure time while his troops are at war. Camp David is a good place to relax when he needs to unwind.
A. What did they think about Bush's vacations, they were more than twice what Obama has taken.
B. It's an all-volunteer force; they sign up for their jobs.
C. I call BS on the soldiers wanting to take a vacation ... 30 days off per year PLUS a 4 day weekend on top of that every month.
D. It's an all-volunteer force.
E. They get weekends off, few work 12 hour days; perhaps downrange, but not all soldiers.
F. Seven days a week, hardly, unless downrange to fight in a war that they volunteered for.
G. Did you whine about Bush who started these wars and took off over 3 years of his 8 years in office? Or is Obama different? If so, why?

Bush took a LOT of time off to his ranch and to MV. Seemed like every time I turned on the TV he was at his ranch...I know he was working most of that time, but perception is what the public understands.

So now we have Mr. Obama who is supposed to be "different" and "better" than what we had before. Yet ABC News reports that Mr. Obama is "having a great time". Again perception. He is still working while at MV, but the public just see's what is on the news.

Being President is one of the greatest jobs in the world. Everyone knows how stressful the job is and the weight of responsibility it has. Mr. Obama knew this going in. He is a young man. In about two years (hopefully) he will be on a permanent vacation and he will NEVER have to work another day in his life if he so chooses, but will be well compensated. But even after 8 years, that's still not a bad deal. He will be in his mid-fifties and life will be good for at least another 30 or more years. (Most modern President's have lived past their 80's so far).
How about Bush?
Were you unhappy about his more than 3 years on holiday after putting the military's lives at risk in unnecessary wars based on lies?

My financial picture is just fine. This isnt about me but while I am doing just fine during this recession. I'm not about to rub it in the faces of those suffering.

Do you think its cool to walk up to people in say unemployment lines and flash 100.00 bills and say sucker sorry your life stinks right now to bad so sad my life is great. Stinks to be you.
Of course not! But, I get the feeling that you believe that those of us who can afford vacations should just stop taking them, because the mere knowledge that someone out there is able to do so will devastate a person in a less flush situation. I've already mentioned my neighbor's $80k car. I don't expect him to take it back to the dealer just because I'm not in a position to purchase one myself. I'm not that fragile.

There will always be rich people and poor people in the world, and most of us fall somewhere in the middle. I choose to be grateful for my life and not to spend time bemoaning whether or not others have more.

As far as the unemployed are concerned, let me remind you that businesses grow (and hire) in response to demand for their products, so I'm going to keep spending my money and feel darn good that I have the funds to do so. The last thing our nation's unemployed need is for me to give up my vacation in some misguided attempt to appease those who are struggling. I guarantee you that the woman who is supporting her family by working the night shift at the Marriott is very happy that I took my daughter to Chicago for a girls' weekend away this past spring.

Potus going on vacation gives a new meaning to all expense paid vacation.
Tax payers pay for the travel, the security and all the other details involved. I don't begrudge Obama's vacation time. I begrudge the mind set of any president like Obama or GWB who take it for granted.
Obama's last had a 20 vehicle caravan. All paid for by us.
As far as I am concerned as long as the tax payer, any tax payer is footing the bill we all have a right to question it. Yes even those who serve their country.
How'd you feel about Bush taking over 3 years out of 8 on vacation?
Why are you upset at Obama taking holidays? He gets attacked for not working weekends and 24-hours a day.
The president is not a slave.

Do you really want the president traveling alone? There's protocol and security that must be followed for every head of state.
I did a project with the Dalai Lama several years ago, he had 3 floors of a hotel for his one room - all for security.

I think that maybe I need to get my foster daughter's e-mail address to you soon so you can tell her how good she has it. She spent 2 solid years in Kuwait with nearly 30 days off in between hitches and then got to come back at the end of the second one. She has been in Afghanistan since January and finally got her month off in August and says she will even get some time off in January when her year there will be over. Now she is in the National Guard and enlisted there while in college to get money to go to school on.

She did not get weekends off in Kuwait since she was in food service and the troops had to eat, but then what would she do if she got time off. She only had to provide food for 5000 men each meal and that could keep one busy. Nope, she wasn't a cook but she did procure the food and had to work with some officers who were pocketing money they skimmed and she had to sweat out turning them in.

She is working at her original job in combat intelligence now and those damned Taliban people just don't know about that weekend off thing.

Rene' is 47 years old but I bet if she got around you talking like this she would show you what lifting weights most of your adult life can do for one.

I know several people living on unemployment who have taken vacations lately. They do it through careful planning. They use frequent flyer miles. They stay with family, eat in.

If you elect not to take a vacation, that is your prerogative. If I elect to spend my hard earned money on a vacation, or a 4 day weekend trip, that is my prerogative.

Oh okay so now we're talking about soldiers because usually when these threads pop up it's about the poor friends whose been laid off and can't find a job. Color me stupid but I would think that the soldiers are aware would have to pay their way back to the US, take a 20 hour flight, won't get weekends off and most likely to work at least 12 hours a day, seven days a week when they enlist in the service...kinda different from the bank teller, or the IT specialist, or the teacher, or the civilian occupation where you usually know what days you're going to be off and have the option of taking a vacation at your leisure if you have the time and money.

But you know, go for whatever angle works best for you.

I'm in the middle class. I lost my job. I was on unemployment. I found another job. I worked hard for what I have and I've earned it. I vacation. I enjoy my life. I'm not going to stop enjoying my life because it may be insensitive to others who refuse to enjoy theirs.

No, it's just that when Obama loses Letterman, he's lost the whole country. We can't wait for November so you can verify this for yourself.
