There's a simple solution to the problem. Tax by mile is ridiculous. Just make sales tax on fuel just like it is with anything else... a percentage.

Are travel has already been double (at least) taxed with the fuel taxes and the taxes used to build the road system. This is just another attempt by Obama to raise more money that he can waste.

He'd probably call it "job stimulus" because it will require people to be hired to put them in.

Or wait, is this just another way to try to push his socialized mass transportation ideas? Once again not showing what is best for this economy, just being his normal stupid, narcissist self and trying to get what he wants?

Those whom support this idiot should hide their faces in shame.
Here in Texas, which of course is run by Republicans, we have some of the highest property taxes in the nation. Couldn't you argue that the Republicans punish people who have to live under a roof? With your logic, aren't they equally as stupid as Obama?

You have a choice to use or not use "toll roads". You have a choice via the fuel tax of how efficient a vehicle you choose. You will have no choice on this. It won't matter if you drive pastures checking cattle, unimproved roads, gravel, or interstate, you'll be tracked and taxed.

This bill is designed to limit free travel of individuals within the USA via taxation. It will be used to move people from rural areas to cities where services are concentrated.
It is all about CONTROL.

The federal fuel tax has been raided just like the Medicare fund and used as a slush fund for government projects. As vehicles become more efficient fuel tax revenues fall. As inflation increases people cut back their driving and fuel tax revenues fall.

You won't be able to license your vehicle, put plates on this without the tax reporting device installed.

How is that not both intrusive and offensive? Or, have you resinged yourself to tyranny already?

Considering I commute by bus, and use the airlines for long trips, I have no objection to a per mile tax. It is no different from a sales tax on gasoline.

As far as being tracked is concerned: I live as if I were in a goldfish bowl. I do whatever I am going to do because I do not care if you or Big Brother is watching.

You're not being forced to use an electronic meter either. Remember, you're among the people who have picked one possibility suggested by CBO and are running around with it.

But, toll roads do employ such ideas, no? That was my point.

That is happening with toll roads. They are funded with tax dollars and then people are made to pay using metering by the mile to use those roads, while they continue to pay tax dollars. So, we're talking business as usual.

Instead of all the complications, as I suggested earlier, I would fully support a percentage based tax like any other sales tax.

And you would have the choice to drive less or not drive at all.

Metering by the mile already exists albeit limited to toll roads right now.
