Not to mention the possibility of losing one's health insurance. It's not even a stretch to think that some employers would fire the expecting mother for some off the wall reason.
You obviously don't employ anyone and have never had to work through the logistics of FMLA.
I know someone who had a baby a few years ago that gets 2 months maternity leave. Which seems okay. However, her husband (who works for the state) gets 6 months of paternity leave! You could imagine how she felt about that!
4 to 6 months of paid leave would be adequate for the US, IMO.
Most working mothers in the states can't afford to take even a month off when they are pregnant because they would lose their income since the time off isn't paid.
Then don't have a baby. It's really quite simple. If you can't afford to take care of a kid, don't have a baby.
Please cite where working until late in a pregnancy is bad for the mother's or baby's health? If she has an uneventful, healthy pregnancy, there is no reason not to work.
Depends on the job I suppose. I'm an aircraft mechanic and it would be impossible for me to work while pregnant, since our entire facility is filled with hazardous chemicals.
If its an office job I see no reason why she can't work until pretty far into the pregnancy.
As for the thread in general, I'm a liberal female who feels that paid time off is nice and all, but that you should have known about needing time off before you got pregnant and planned accordingly.
Babies just happen... The stork has a roulette wheel and spins it and if your name comes up, poof, you're pregnant. Since it's all just a game of chance for some obscure stork both abortions and pregnancies should be subsidized for whoever long that oppressive stork feels the need to afflict you with his vicious wrath.

Common since tells me without a doubt that if a cheap employer wants to get rid of a expecting mother they can. Especially in some low pay, penny pinching state. I'm absolutely sure it happens quite often.
