You'd be surprised how many people simply freeze when something like that happens. The shock of it all, and the rapidity of it, just leaves them unable to move, sometimes for several seconds.
Firearms training including proficiency should be required. If a cop can't meet the standards then they should be a meter maid wher they can't kill or maim innocent bystanders.
I cannot obtain a concealed carry permit in my state without meeting such standards and since cops work for me, so to should they.
It is. How do you not know this? The standards here, at least for law enforcement is eons ahead of what is required to obtain a CCW. They are not even close. If a Police Officer can't meet those standards, they are stripped of their badge and gun, given one on one instruction, then they get to try again weeks later, if they still can't meet those standards, they're fired.
Good point. Governments and their agencies are historically poor at setting standards for themselves.
I shoot with cops fairly often. I have my own range and word travels that I don't mind cops using it. The #1 excuse is. They don't pay us to target practice.
If I had a job that might require me to use a gun to save lives, especially my own I would be practicing every chance I got.
#2 excuse. They won't pay for the ammo to practice.
Then do what I did invest in a good progressive reloader and save 50%.
#3 Not enough time to practice. two hours a week would pay in dividends.
The reason I make my range avaialable for the local cops is so they don't have to travel 45 min to an hour to the nearest state range.

But what if the standards are too low? I have yet to meet a cop that can shoot with me. The few who are fairly proficient didn't get that way from their training.

Yes, you would have no idea where the shots were being fired from. When you ran you could as likely have ran right into them.

I'm sure you realize that internet bragging impresses nobody.
Somebody did a study a few years back, and found that the police have a 34% accuracy rating when discharging their firearms. And these are people supposedly trained in how to do it. Yeah, right..

I am sure you realize that your opinion doesn't impress me either. The fact remains and correct me if I am wrong there are far too many stories with video to back it up of cops emptying their weapons at targets less than 10 meters away. The hit miss ratio would hardly qualify them as experts or proficient.
I wasn't bragging in any way shape or form. I am a combat vet and obviously better trained than the average local cop. What eludes me is that someone who may need to rely on their side arm practices so little.
A few years back 5 cops in Luzerne county Pa confronted a lunatic with a chainsaw. Over 60 rounds were fired scoring 13 confirmed hits.... Less than 1 in 4 bullets hit their target. The distance was 10 feet or 3.3 yards. All of these cops qualified and one of them was a state trooper.
