I disagree with this. This wasn't a case of the police firing on an unarmed man. This was the case of the police stopping a confirmed threat. I think its best to seperate the two issues so that we're not demonizing good police officers.
It's not a crime for being a bad shot.
Firearms training including proficiency should be required. If a cop can't meet the standards then they should be a meter maid wher they can't kill or maim innocent bystanders.
I cannot obtain a concealed carry permit in my state without meeting such standards and since cops work for me, so to should they.
I'm curious on a legal basis I wonder if the cops can be held civilly liable.? I suspect and hope not.
Also I'm wondering do folks think shooting a gun is like some sort of video game where 100% accuracy is assured?
From 10 or less feet? I would hope for cops to be able to group 2 inches in a ten ring. Most cops only shoot enough to requalify and that is exactly why you see so many stories of cops emptying their weapons and scoring so few actual hits. Their weapon is a stranger to their hand.
That said the sheep should have dropped to the ground and cleared the line of fire.

Perhaps they do meet the minimum standard. The standard is too low....
I was thinking the same thing. How hard would it be to drop to the ground and get clear of the line of fire? I see people milling about in cities and they remind me of sheep. This incident once again reminds me of spooked sheep.
You'd be surprised how many people simply freeze when something like that happens. The shock of it all, and the rapidity of it, just leaves them unable to move, sometimes for several seconds.
Are you seriously asking for more evidence in a Police shooting on City-Data?? Get with the program, on C-D, the cops are automatically wrong, you should know this by now
I'd like my comments in this thread to be shown anybody calls me "anti-police." We need officers. We don't need to criticize them when they're having to make life or death decisions on the fly. This is one of those instances.
All this craziness yesterday over the Empire State shootings and it appears it was the NYPD doing all the shooting. Mayor Bloomberg should stop worrying about gun control across the country and worry about his own back yard.
Unfortunately the Dems are probably celebrating as this is a major black eye for police commissioner Ray Kelly who many were trying to persuade to run for the GOP mayoral seat.
Free country = dangerous place.
Those who would give up essential liberty for a moments safety, deserve neither.
The police who shot so crazily should be fired from the police force.
