I'd also like to point out that food stamps does not allow someone to buy luxurious food like filet mignon, salmon, king crab, ribeye, etc. in decent quantities like so many tea partiers have allegedly witnessed on here. $250 a month per person is not a lot of food and usually is enough to buy cheap, unhealthy, per-processed crap and soft drinks. $1.80 for a 2 liter soda or almost $4.50+ for a gallon of milk. Talk about the easy life
The average allowance for SNAP is about $1.50 per meal or $135+/-per month, per person. It would not take too many steaks to eat up the entire month's allowance.
I do not recall the last time I saw someone pay for their groceries with cash. Everyone swipes something.
Even in California the max on food stamps is $200 per person per month and only ~40% get that full amount. The average is $120 per month or $4 per day or $1.33 per meal.
That's hardly lavish and, no, $1.33 doesn't buy many luxury foods.
Nobody should expect lavish meals either. Hard to understand why people are almost proud to receive handouts.
Crazy.
What to bet there is a correlation between capping welfare benefits to the explosion of disability claims?
Want to bet there is a correlation between the explosion of disability applications and the aging population?
The majority of applications are coming from people age 50-64. While the number of applications is surging the percentage of applications for disability has been declining.
A family friend in his mid 50's has dystonia. He can no longer talk, swallow or work. There is no doubt about his disability and no cure. The most common treatment is BOTOX injections. These have failed. He lives off of Slim Fast ( cheaper than Ensure) and chokes on it. I suspect he's down to around 100 pounds.
He's on his third attempt to get approved for permanent disability. At this rate, he will die before getting approved.
Where are the stats on the number of children also receiving free school breakfasts and lunches during the school year? Also where are the stats on the number of children who receive free lunches at churches, community centers, public pools etc. on an organized grant-funded-basis throughout the summer when school is out?
Those wanting to divert the conversation and speak to the issue of corporate welfare have valid points, that they should raise when they start another thread.

That's crazy! My best-friend's brother in law has Dystonia. ...some things should be an automatic after they pass a certain point
This is a link to the whole "Poverty in America" series by NPR which is full of facts which dispell just about all of the ignornant talking points which are so popular with the political right in this country. Facts just aren't their friends. http://www.npr.org/series/155932539/poverty-in-america
The illegals cannot get welfare though their citizen children can just like any other citizen. That said, only the citizens can get anything.
