I would have loved to see Ford's River Rouge plant at full tilt, where an iron ore carrier docked at one end and finished cars came out the other. I also think many people don't realize what an important part Detroit played in our WW II effort, building the machinery of war.
If we let Detroit go down the tubes while making lame attempts to rebuild other countries to are liking I think we will have officially screwed the pooch.

Agreed. As much as many of us don't care for the bad politics that created the current Detroit...
Why the hell are we sending money to countries that we have to borrow from China. I'd much rather see that investment here in the US. At least here it might create jobs and rebuild this country
It's time we make some tough decisions and take care of the US first.

I think you could make the case that, given Detroit's current situation, the pooch was screwed long ago.

Detroit has had a turbulent history. And the economic history is quite odd as well. Both Detroit and Seattle were turning out airplanes during WWII. When the war ended, the government didn't need anyone bomber planes. Detroit went back to making automobiles. Seattle had some hard times for a bit, but with the rise of the jet aircraft, Boeing boomed again into the 1960s. Seattle's fortunes went up and down with airplanes, but for some reason, bounced back. It also helped that Microsoft moved to Seattle.

You may have said that tongue in cheek but why not?
If the Mall of America can be a tourist destination why can't D(oobie) Town?
Could be the Napa of the Midwest.
