I'll probably keep my last name at least legally. It is a pain to change all the documents such as driver's license, my credit etc. The tradition started with a way to make the woman property of the man. Most women do take the husband's last name but it should be a choice.
I know a man who took his wife's last name. Had nothing to do with masculinity. He just wanted nothing to do with his father, not even the name.
that sounds terrible
a close friend of mine is thinking about changing his name, for similar reasons. no connection to this father. However, when I (sincerely) suggested he change it to his wife's ... he assumed i was making fun of him. I figure, if you don't like your OWN last name (which I can't personally fathom), then taking your wife's surely can't be any worse than that.
as for me, i probably won't get married anyway .. but i'd have a big problem with marrying someone who didnt' want to take my last name. given that certain aspects of marriage are symbolic (the diamond, for example) , i wouldn't really like the symbolism there.
