I'll probably keep my last name at least legally. It is a pain to change all the documents such as driver's license, my credit etc. The tradition started with a way to make the woman property of the man. Most women do take the husband's last name but it should be a choice.

You would not accept me or my parents making a decision that did not affect you?

My masculinity isn't tied up in my last name, how much I make, or who does the proposing.

Having seen what a friend had to go through to change her name back after a divorce, I wouldn't recommend it.

Does anybody else believe in keeping man's name in traditional marriage?

In my country it's cultural or tradition to take the man's name. My husband who is American leaves it up to me if I want to change it or not.

I will change my name soon.

That, too. I had to petition the court to get my own name back!

I know a man who took his wife's last name. Had nothing to do with masculinity. He just wanted nothing to do with his father, not even the name.

that sounds terrible

a close friend of mine is thinking about changing his name, for similar reasons. no connection to this father. However, when I (sincerely) suggested he change it to his wife's ... he assumed i was making fun of him. I figure, if you don't like your OWN last name (which I can't personally fathom), then taking your wife's surely can't be any worse than that.

as for me, i probably won't get married anyway .. but i'd have a big problem with marrying someone who didnt' want to take my last name. given that certain aspects of marriage are symbolic (the diamond, for example) , i wouldn't really like the symbolism there.
