I say BS! There is nothing xenophobic about a country's citizens wanting to retain their identifying culture, language and way of life. That's not to say that they object to minority cultures living among them as long as they are in the country legally and in controlled numbers.
Amuse you? English is our identifying language. Our country is neither identified as a Hispanic one nor an Asian one. Need I explain any further?
Yes. Tell me what you think makes an American an American. You gave me one but English is spoken in many other countries so that can't be "it".

If you don't know what our identifying American culture is then I can't help you. I gave you one example and I also told you what we are not identified as culturally.
Being American certainly doesn't mean going to Home Depot and seeing signs posted in English and in Spanish. Even though the US doesn't have an official language, everyone should be expected to speak English. This is coming from a foreign language instructor.

The reason you can't help me is because the defining characteristics of American culture vary and these characteristics have changed, are changing, and will continue to change.

Home Depot posts signs in English and Spanish because in business the only language that matters is money.
Looks like a just found one of the defining characteristics of American culture.
