We don't have an alliance with the Saudi people -- it's with the Saudi royalty. If they were ever toppled, Saudi Arabia would turn into the world's worst terrorist state because the populist elements in that country would surely support folks like bin Laden.
Whereas the Iranian people are increasingly taking a liking the west while their government hates us. No wonder Middle East policy is so messed up.
So we're supposed to let these pissant tyrants to hold us hostage?
We're addicted. The Saudis sit on top of a lot of sweet crude and they spend billions on US military hardware. Any politician trying to take on the US oil industry and the US arms industry will meet with impassable roadblocks if he's lucky, with an accident if he's not.

If all these rumors are true about the Saudi involvement with 9/11 we clearly invaded/occupied the wrong country in 2003.
We have one major problem with now saying that the Saudis are to blame for 9/11; we convinced the world that Afghanistan was to blame. Of course I am sure many countries took it as just more American, imperialist propaganda; but some did not. We also convinced Americans and we had many soldiers killed and wounded in Afghanistan. Are we now going to tell them their sacrifice was for nothing? Lying is a very dangerous game and it can catch up to those that deceive.
False flag schemes like Operation Northwoods can often blow up in people's face. Too bad Bush, Cheney and the Saudis didn't consider that.
No, the Saud family is somewhat controlling the activities of violent Salafi (Wahabi) terrorists within Saudi Arabia...and only "somewhat." They aren't doing much to control Salafi violence against non-Muslims and Shiites within Saudi Arabia. They're doing nothing whatsoever to control Salafi (Wahabi) violence outside Saudi Arabia, they are well aware that their money is being funneled into violent Salafi (Wahabi) activities outside Saudi Arabia, and they deliberately provide financial support worldwide to the teaching of Salafi (Wahabi) doctrine that they know leads to violence among the most strident (or most easily influenced).
But right now the Saud family is abiding by their 1972 agreement with the US to sell their oil only for US dollars. That is a major support for the US dollar on the world market and is the reason the US government continues to support them.
Exactly our government has always been HOs for Saudi Oil!
Freakin sand rats wouldn't have a pot to p in if the Brits and Americans hadn't developed their oil fields in the first place, those Neanderthals don't have the brains!

Charlie Rose discussed the redacted pages with a Saudi expert and they speculated on what the missing 23 (?) pages contain - most likely some link between terrorist funding and the royal family but with 7000 members of the royal family supporting a wide range of political viewpoints that seems to not be so startling a revelation.
Overall the relationship is fracturing and continues to grow apart. The Saudis no longer can count on the US Military as their private army and although they are the force behind OPEC prices the US is nowhere near as dependent on Saudi oil as we were in the 1970s. Whether you think this is a good trend or bad one largely depends on your politics and foreign policy viewpoints.
The US could be hurt by KSA moving oil to another standard or by a quadrupling of prices but the Saudis have far more to lose than we do if the relationship completely falls apart.

Yet if we believe the right-wing analysis, the Iraqis had the cleverness to develop an entire network of secret WMD facilities, produce colossal stockpiles, and then dismantle and move the entire thing right under the West's nose, leaving no trail behind. Curse those pesky Arabs - clever and stupid at the same time.

So, we laid down with dogs and woke up with fleas.
