Why permit them LEGAL access to girls/women in such facilities to begin with? All they have to do is say they "identify" as "transgender" and they can get as close to semi-naked or naked girls/women as they want in multiple occupancy changing/ locker/shower/etc. rooms.

Exactly, but not only that... If law enforcement authorities know they can take no action against someone who "claims" to be "transgender," they simply won't respond to a complaint or plea for help.
The cops would be powerless to answer a call from a victim because the perp claimed to be identifying as female? Woman on woman crime is not prosecutable?
That's why I suggested offering the option for transsexuals to have their forms of IDs modified for free to reflect the gender they identify with. That will help weed out the creeps.

Can't report a 6'4" male exposing his penis to your 6 year old daughter anymore if that person "claims" to be "transgender."
Sexual orientation has nothing to do with identity. Homosexuality is a behavior and people do not have to tolerate all kinds of behaviors especially those that conflict with morality.
Now, allowing a man to use the women locker room because he claims he feels like a girl inside, is just absurd.

And public bathrooms have not even been universal for a century. Another point--if this has been going on since the beginning of forever then why do they demand laws requiring access? And we have NEVER had teenagers in high school suing for access to the opposite sex bathroom before. See the Illinoise case where they gave a transgender girl (looks like a boy with long hair; he's a juvenile so he's not had a sex change nor is he even on hormones) access to her own single-use bathroom but that wasn't enough for her.

I'd submit that there were trans long before there was surgery to give them their identity.

I don't think all this fuss is over them demanding at all. I think it's because idiots are beeetching no matter WHICH bathroom they're attempting to use.
If a transgender is dressed like a female but still has his dangling participle, how in the heck is he to be expected to use the men's room without betting chided for looking, dressing and acting like a female?
It's obvious all your Queen Victorias aren't going to let HIM park it in a female stall, so now what? Pee in the hallway?
While travelling all over the world and especially in Europe, it was not unusual in the least to have a women enter the men's room to take an unused stall rather than wait in the women's line up.
I've even been in washrooms where a female attendant handed out the damn tissue by the individual purchase. A bathroom in Montreal Dorval Airport Canada required me to lift my feet one at a time while standing at a urinal only to have the floor mopper revealed as a hindu woman complete with sari and dot on her forehead.
Only in America is this going to cause heads to explode.
