Well, y'know, nobody is FORCING her (or her husband, or her children) to live there. After all, the family is independently wealthy, they could rent (or buy) a house in D.C. that has no connection to slavery at all, perhaps one that was built by Union Workers sometime since 1970! In fact, she did not have to accompany barack to D.C. at all. She could have stayed in Chicago, in the house they had there.

I would think that those slaves that had a great deal of European DNA due to forced breeding with the white masters over several generations received preferential treatment or were released. Many probably decided to be white rather than black for obvious reasons. This may be why they came up with the one drop rule.

Yet, the man is half white, why didn't you mention that? If we had slavery today the President would be considered black, because of skin color. So this makes him mixed race and most likely blacks were mixed race more than just black race. Why does President Obama not talk about his white family, unless, its about the mom being poor, which is not true......or his paranoid white grandmother? Blacks who are part white are suppose to be embarrassed if they connect with their white side. Why would some blacks shame those of mixed race?
As for your last paragraph you would be surprised how many blacks have said this very thing......now who do you, residinghere2007 & DD want to blame? Easy to blame whites, when one is trying to avoid their own race shaming.
Nope because he was not raised culturally as black nor does he look black to where society would treat him culturally as black.
As stated, I have had this happen in my family and I have blonde haired, blue eyed cousins who are 3-25% black but I consider them to be white and they consider themselves to be white as well in an American context. Genealogically based, we consider our family to be "tri-racial" due to having known African, Native American (though miniscule), and European ancestry.
You didn't even read my post . The white slave were slaves for life.
They were not slaves for life in America and they especially did not become indentured servants or slaves at their birth like black slaves had occur starting in the late 1600s and early 1700s. As stated I have ancestors who had white indentured servant mothers and they won cases where the holder of their indentured contracts attempted to make them slaves for life. They won based on the fact that they were of white or native maternal heritage.
Maybe in other places in the Caribbean and Europe and Australia, but they were not slaves for life in America. I will note though that indentured servants had high mortality rates in the 1600s in particular and most would die within 5 years of arriving in the Virginia colony especially. Most indentured contracts were for 7-10 years. Both African and European indentured servants had high mortality rates.
I love it when I see entire threads dedicated to using 21st century moral constructs to 18th century culture and mindsets.
