Try not to confuse people who are so ready to have a temper fit that they didn't stop to understand single stall (as in completely private and nobody else in the room no matter their gender)!
It is funny, and kinda crazy. I have a lot of social anxiety, so being in public is hard enough. Going to the bathroom in public is a nightmare for me, especially if there are several people in there already.
No shortage of males and females who are uncomfortable/ become anxious when using multi stall/ urinal/ sink facilities.
how do you stop people from committing a crime before they do it?
with many transgenders it's impossible to tell they aren't the sex they are dressing as. Should the dressing room attendant grab the crotches of every customer before letting them in?
For all of you who have stopped shopping Target, don't worry. I've since been buying more, including the majority of my groceries, pet supplies, back to school stuff. I'm doing what I can to make it up, and make sure every time that I check out with a 3-digit total, I'm there because of their policy of inclusion.
You might be, many more aren't. People get tired of being looked down on when they don't automatically agree with the incessant demands from aggrieved interest groups. I suspect Target is in more trouble than they're letting on.

FYI - no one was demanding this. No one.
Target decided to have this bathroom policy all it's own.
I've not been back to Target since they made their policy change. Not because of the transgenders, but because any man can go into the women's bathroom at any time. If women object to the presence of a man who is not a transgender in the bathroom, Target will have a talk with them and apparently have them arrested if they further object, according to one article I read some time ago.
Those whose goal has been to do harm to women and children now have an open door to do so at Target with its change in policy. The CEO could care less. Now they are losing sales and want to recover. Money talks.
I spent quite a bit of money at Target on a monthly basis and at Christmas. I won't go back to a store that puts PC interests ahead of the safety of women and children.
