My opinion: We should thank unions for making workplaces safer and for implementing weekends off and 40hr work weeks, but I think they've outlived their usefulness. In 2017, they seem to hurt the job economy more than help it. States with large union presences have slower growing economies and slower job growth.
The 40 hour work week was implemented by Ford to attract workers due to market conditions for labor. We have agencies like OSHA now for safety. Unions are irrelevant, and just cost the worker more in the form of an additional large tax to be in a union. The union bosses make out pretty well though.
Private sector unions do a lot of good. Public sector unions do a lot of harm. I have nothing against private sector unions per se although there certainly are bad ones. Government unions, OTOH, exist to extort money from the public.
In today's world, worker abuse is gone, and all the worker protections/laws that have been put in place and lawyers/lawsuits now keep employers from stepping over the line.
At this point, unions today are basically a parasite to it's host company/industry. They keep wanting/forcing more, but eventually they'll kill their host.
And don't get me started on public unions. They exist merely to fleece the taxpayer for the sole benefit of it's members.

Unions. Glad they're fading away. I remember the CWA workers in LA back in the day. Six figure salaries for connecting wires and cable from point A to B. Contract pay raises that had nothing to do with actual job performance. Ten years tenure and no more jobs in your area? Company paid transportation, hotel and meals anywhere in the US where there was a job slot. Never met a more entitled group of people.
All resources and means of production open to everyone. Want to sell your labor? Write up a contract of services offered and terms of employment. If that includes a union...so be it. Go out and compete. Good luck.
