Everywhere. There are the desperate men who will date anyone and there are the good guys who just refuse to date. Too many women looking for an instant relationship (some guys also). Desperation isn't good, and it can be very obvious. Once you have been through a serious relationship and realize you have been screwed why would you go through a women's "dream relationship" again. The younger the more they think the guy is just there to provide their fantasy.
If it is metro areas that are stacked this way, then isn't there an overabundance of women in every other area, since men and women are much more evenly numbered as a whole (until later when there are slightly more women than men)?
This being the case, how is it that we see plenty of men not in huge cities complaining about not being able to get a date?

If you live in a city, just give up on dating. There is too much competition. 100 men for every woman. Seriously, just don't even try.
If you see me trying, don't be tempted to try. Save yourselves. It's going to be a huge failure for you. Save yourself the shame. I'm just taking one for the team. If a woman talks to you, run away. She's only trying to get her Thursday 2nd dinner from you. She's already got her three square meals a day covered by the 21 other guys she's dating.

The stats for the map come from the 2012 American Community Survey.
Until roughly peri-menopause age, women have a huge advantage. There is no reason for a female to be single long up until about age 45.

Incorrect. Even if there are more single women than single men in rural areas outside of the MSAs examined by the data presented (highly unlikely BTW), there is not enough of a population base in rural areas to overcome the male surpluses in large urban areas.

What are you talking about? Tens of thousands of women in a given town aren't enough of a population base? There's a minimum population base for anyone to get a date? So in smaller towns nobody dates?
And given these abysmal odds, it is weird that nevertheless, close to 50% of all U.S. men are married at an average age of 29. Since we don't go directly from single to married, obviously, an additional amount in fair proportion are dating someone and possibly living with someone.
So THAT'S weird.
Equally weird is how many men in these apparently man heavy cities are dating. Non-rich, non-gorgeous guys. I've lived in New York. I've lived near L.A. People connected. Average people. Men and women. All the time. Maybe those are not large enough populations nor significant enough cities to fit into these paradigms?
