That's just it though, a lot of it has to do with venue, as I've been trying to say, and how women present ourselves.
Men believe (as so many threads on CD have borne out) that a woman who makes an effort to look nice and places herself into their view, are advertising available goods, and if we're not, then we are desperate for attention. Sometimes that might be true. Often it's not what's going on in a woman's head, but that is outside of the scope of this discussion. So given however that men believe this, yeah, when a woman posts attractive photos of herself, the ones she looks at and thinks, "wow, I look pretty!" if her profile online is open to comment, she gets comments. Those pics are often the "sexy" looking ones, with tight or somewhat revealing clothes. Men do respond to that. No shock to any woman ever.
Same if a woman is hanging out in a sexually charged environment, or shows up on an OLD site with the "casual sex" button checked (which LOL I did for a bit, to rather amusing results)...any woman who does something that gives men the impression she's got a "DTF" sign hanging around her neck, will get guys going, "Pick me!" (Actual message I actually received as an opening line on OK Cupid.)
But many AVERAGE...and above, and below average...women, don't go through life posturing for the male gaze. We put on a comfy t-shirt, and a pair of jeans and some sneakers, throw our hair up in a hasty knot, and run to the store. And unless we are in a region dominated by really thirsty men, such as a "macho culture" environment or near certain college campuses, we don't get any come-ons. Maybe guys are noticing us but not saying anything. Who knows? We don't care, because we are there to pick up milk and bread, not men.
Now I do recall living in an area with a high number of immigrants from rural South American areas years ago, and I think there is a "macho culture" thing going on where they do catcall and hit on lots of women. There used to be a group of them that would hang out near the front of a Walmart I shopped at, ages ago, and they would be more vocally and indiscriminately doing that. Some cultures operate a bit differently. Whatever. The area I'm in now is middle to high income, mostly Caucasian, relatively affluent, thriving Whole Foods and all, and I do not see this constant "men hitting on women everywhere" thing here. I just don't. Not only do I not see it aimed at me, I simply don't see it, at all.
And lots of women, even when single, don't ever set foot in nightclubs and other "meat market" type places. Some women aren't into dancing or drinking. So that scene does not universally apply.
At least as significantly...some of us are quite happy and content not being hit on constantly. If I want to find a man, I know where and how to do that. I don't need guys stalking me around a grocery store anyways.
They get hit on everyday on facebook and Twitter, and if my female friends in conservative India are getting hit on by attractive young men over social media, when these girls don't even post pictures of themselves online lel, I ain't seeing a significant percentage of the female population in the western world going long without getting male attention
So they either have their profiles public, which is a terrible idea, or they have friended the kind of people who creep on women on social media.
Most people have the sense to keep their social media pretty locked down these days.
Most of the women I know who leave their profiles open like that, do it on purpose... It's not that they love the "attention" it's that they are screen-shotting your messages and making fun of you in "secret" groups. Turning thirsty guys into memes, it's a bit of a trend. Just in case any dudes were not aware...

I am older now but I do believe this has something to do with age and location.

Yes, online it's ridiculous and I'm not just talking OLD, either. I've been approached here, graphically. (I have a buddy here who remembers the married guy who begged to crawl through fire to be allowed to touch our underwear, LOL. You know who you are...I doubt it was just us two...it was probably every woman on the forum.) I belong to a fitness forum and guys send sexual PMs there too.
But I am not sure that counts as obviously, such keyboard Clooneys aren't attempting an actual date and probably not even a physical hookup, they're looking to collect pics and be told they're the man. The internet has done weird things to people and to their assumptions of anonymity, and understanding of boundaries.
But to me "hit on" implications some sort of purpose toward meeting, and much of the time, even though it is part of the fantasy, such lonely, inappropriate guys don't intend any such thing. They want to sext and get new pics to prove they've still got it.
No, it's pretty true that women get hit on everyday. A few women voting on a poll do not take away from the vast majority of the women on the globe being hit on and pursued by men. And that's just talking about the western world. Lemme tell you of my Indian female friend who gets hit on from places like facebook, twitter, to down everytime she leaves the house, and no, she ain't attractive. It's not only about looks. It's about the vibe you put out. If you seem super approachable you're going to get hit on more because guys believe they have more of a chance of not being turned down by you. It won't always about who is "better" or "cuter."
No one ever claimed that this poll was at all scientific, it was just a fun exercise to prove to you guys who insist that women get hit on every day, all the time that it's not true.
Most women are not hot party girls under the age of 30. Many women are not looking for casual sex with strangers. Assuming that what is true for this small subset of women represents the experience of *all* women is just wrong. And it demonstrates how many men have blinders on for a significant population of women whose experience is vastly different than the porny fantasy they've concocted in their minds.
