So one's background in a religion is irrelevant to one's ability to speak about said religion?
Not irrelevant, but not necessarily authoritative. In my field, I know many people that can recite the formulas but don't really know what they mean. Some can't even talk off of the formula. lmao, I call them formula fundies.
BTW: Fundy is a personality type not a belief statement. But what do i know.
She has spent time in the LDS church and spent a lifetime studying it.
Well, I'll be damned. I've spent more years at it than she has by far. What is your point anyway? I've already said that anyone who has an opinion about Mormonism is free to speak his or her mind about it. What more do you want?
From the Wikipedia article about Sandra Tanner & her husband: "They are both ex-Mormons. The Tanners founded the Utah Lighthouse Ministry, whose stated mission is "to document problems with the claims of Mormonism and compare LDS doctrines with Christianity". Sandra Tanner continues to operate it."
So, you are giving authority to speak about Mormonism to an ex-Mormon. Do you think she might have an agenda?

Hey....you seem to think that everyone and their sister can speak about Christianity...so why wouldn't we take the word of an ex-Mormon who has been studying it her whole life?

No, I haven't. Why? You'll have to excuse my stupidity. I'm just trying to figure out why the Civil War and farming are pertinent to this discussion.
I'm not the one that brought up farming or the civil war.

You obviously think she's a very reliable source, and that's your prerogative. Most people would rather read something that not only quotes LDS leaders, but does so in context and with an explanation of how their comments fit into LDS theology. It's as simple as that. You want to think the worst of Mormonism, BF? Then the Tanners are for you. By all means, knock yourself out reading everything they've ever written.
My great-great-grandfather was a Civil War soldier and a farmer. Does that qualify me to speak with authority on military tactics and agriculture?
That reminds me of an interesting comment I once read:
"If I want to gain an understanding of Chinese culture, I can best obtain it from someone who has not only made a thorough study of things Chinese, but, even more importantly, sees the world through Chinese eyes."

Hey now....
I don't know that ex members have an agenda so much as a psychological need.* For some of us it's part of dealing with what happened to us. I'm suspicious of those that leave the group only to start their own ministry though. That's how we end up with a Wayne Bent or a Warren Jeffs.
