Wait, we should be ashamed to be naked? I mean, there are certainly circumstances where being naked may not be appropriate (depending on culture and social context) but shame? Why, unless one is morbidly obese with no legitimate medical cause.
Strictly speaking, clothes should mainly be worn for warmth.
Disgust and shame are evolved responses that tend to steer us away from things that are bad for us like rotten meat or poisonous substances. It has gotten attached to social contexts in forms such as modesty. I think that modesty and the wearing of clothing are eminently practical adaptations. Modesty allows there to be some mystery left in sexuality and also creates healthy boundaries around one's sexuality. And as to the utility of wearing clothing, just try to take a stroll in the woods or especially the desert without some clothes on. Or go outside in the winter.
That the two happen to be connected for practical reasons is just a coincidence.
I am not one of those people who thinks we'd all be better off displaying our shriveled lard-touches and sagging breasts in public. A little of that goes a long way. Some things, once seen, cannot be un-seen. Kathy Bates in a hot tub in the movie About Schmidt comes to mind. The human body may be beautiful in the ideal, but in reality most of us are not "all that" except to those who chose to don the Rose-Colored Glasses of Love.
I don't think people should ever be ashamed of being nude.
I agree....MontanaGuy, I think around the age of about 5 children either already do, or will be in a hurry (by parents who'll explain it) to understand that they will not be accepted, nor safe, outside their homes,( and amongst society) naked...Also, when everyone else is clothed, they would feel awkward and more vulnerable (they would know they stand out) without them...I don't believe that means that they have become ashamed of their naked bodies though...just that , so to speak....when you're in Rome, do as the Romans do.
People aren't ashamed of being naked. What their ashamed of (and should be) is being naked in public. Nobody wants to see your body. Do society a favor and cover it up.
Why???? Other animals dont cover it up,WHY DO WE HAVE TO??
