In the military, you almost always have to go into supervising others if you want to get promoted (and make more money, higher retirement pension). I studied a certain area of nursing where I thought I'd be solely responsible for my own actions. I have a feeling as I retire from the military, that the thoughts to returning to healthcare hit me (I'm 46 yrs old) - whatever I decide to do, it won't be supervising. My first question in an interview will be, "does this position involve supervising and evaluating other people" - the answer will need to be "no" -

My sis went back @ age 55 and is getting some superb medical training from VA that will put her into triple digit income w/o management responsibilities. While she has previously enjoyed training, this 2 yr program is very tough, and hopes she gets though it, as it will be her last hoorah.
I agree with all or you. I spent most of my career as a hearing officer responsible for conducting informal hearings and issuing determinations on disputed tax issues. I really enjoyed the job - it was challenging and I was always learning something new, and was only responsible for my own work. But I was topped out in my grade, and in order to move up I had to move into management. It was what I thought I always wanted; I was always thinking that I could run that place as well or better than the managers that preceded me. Well, I was glad for the opportunity, and it turns out that I could, but I didn't realize how much bull***t was involved in being responsible for the whole section. It was an eye-opener. And it was so draining. I needed to get more and more production out of my staff but was given fewer and fewer resources to do it. I never went to upper management with a problem unless I also proposed a solution. Usually, they would agree that my concerns were valid, and that the changes I proposed were reasonable, and then would do nothing about it. They operated by crisis management, and as long as we were getting the work done, they were blind to ways to do it more effectively or efficiently. It was like beating my head against the wall. So glad to be out of there!

Oh yes! This I won't miss. I once had a boss who said (in frustration) You don't do more with less, you do less with less. Well, duh! We just don't care about quality anymore. You know what the NASA engineers say - Faster, better, cheaper? Pick any 2 - that's all you can do.
I will be so happy not to be in that toxic environment anymore!
I made it! Today was my final day of work. Still seems surreal. We had a nice lunch in the cafateria on little student benches.
You'll never guess what my departing give is. What is the least favorite(I think) traditional retirement gift? What is something that I won't need to keep track of very often?
TIME!!!!!!!
I received a gold Seiko watch. It's funny because I said to myself the last teaching day- I'll never wear my watch again.
At least the receipt is in the box so I can return it. I appreciate the gesture though.
Anyone else get a watch? At least I didn't get a collage of all my coworkers.
I'm getting ready now to celebrate at home with my family and eat steamed crabs! Yum.
What an awesome feeling!! I'm glad you didnt get the dreaded collage either. You couldnt return it, although you might have been able to sell it on eBay. People will buy anything on eBay.

Congrats. Now time to decompress -
Oh yeah, my staff did give me a $300 gift certificate for golf merchandise. I guess I talked about golf too much as I dreamed about retirement -
