Ok since you asked! The Gambler, The Tin Bucket and Peoples were all common spots for Kel-Lac Boots, Ingram Park Imployees and Southwest Research burn outs. They had 3 for one on friday's. I spent many a friday there and I met a lot of cool people. We would usually drink and dance and then go eat at either Tin Bucket or Peoples and go home. It was a lot of fun.

Any memories of the Jimenez place across the highway? That was the place to be in the early 80's.

What about the west side? Nobody has good memories? Zarzamora and Culebra area.
Remember Karams on Zarzamora and Commerce? Well it is history! It is gone, demolished. I think Bill Millers bought it and I don't know what they are planning to do. This is my part of town. Went to Irving Middle School and Tech High School.

Does anyone recall the play park (name)on the corner of Roosevelt and Southcross. It had all kinds of fun rides and I remember taking my son there in 82 and only paying 25c for each ride. It's now a used car lot.

Wink BIGTOWN Hardware

For satx56, you are probably thinking about BIGTOWN Hardware on Old Laredo Hwy. It was owned and operated by Mr. Sam Wong who I wrote about in my 2005 book Chinese Heart of Texas. It tells the history of the Chinese in Texas from 1875 until 1975 focusing mainly on the San Antonio colony. It was the oldest and largest Chinese community in the state until about 1960 when Houston won the numbers game. Sam Wong was a former 82nd Airborne paratrooper and POW of the Germans in WW II. He finally closed the store in '05 and retired after more than fifty years in that location. Sam passed away the next year but his wife is still living in SA. I'm told that the old hardware store was demolished for something begger but not necessarily better. A foto of BIGTOWN appears in my new book San Antonio Past, Present & Always due out by Thanksgiving with 350 vintage and a few modern fotos of my beloved hometown. I live in Austin but like to check this board occasionally. Curiously, I left SA in 1974 for Austin to return to UT but every book I've done so far is about the Alamo City with number six already started. Best to all, BudB

Sunshine Amusement Park. The funny thing is that park used to be on Military Drive next to the old "Trail Drive in". This was when I was a kid 50's maybe early 60's. It was about where Taco Cabana or Pep Boy's is now. Near the former Wal Mart location. At some point that park shut down, vanished then came back on Roosevelt.
