Are these areas uncovered only during high tide or do they stay muddy and exposed during high tide?
There's wet sand at low tide at all the beaches, not so much "mud"

ummmmmmmmmmmm

on a serious note, sharks don't concern me too much, especially being a lifelong surfer, but these sightings seem to be growing.

Over in Newport Beach, there's this lagoon called "Upper Newport Bay." While it's a wildlife refuge, there's one designated swimming beach. Quite nice, in fact, because not only is the water warm, shallow, and warm, at low tide there's enormous areas of mudflats of knee-deep, thick, black mud, fine for taking a mud bath. You cover yourself head to toe in the mud, and as long as you're in your bathing suit, the mud should come off very easily after a swim in the lagoon. The mud is actually on the warm side, too.

You can see bat rays in the bay. They are actually annoying when fishing for guitar fish. Many a fishing rod ended up zipping out to sea from those critters.

Surf report is saying the water temp is 69 today- it was 76 yesterday. I'm not sure I buy this sudden drop so early... I know some of you have different sources for sea surface temps, can you share them with me?
