Exactly. East and West Oakland have had serious crime problems for decades. Oakland has had state topping violent crime for over a decade straight, yet because some $10 a beer place pops up in Uptown, suddenly things have changed for some people.

Murder rate breakdown by race (of victim), per 100k:

Oakland:

White: 4.9
Hispanic: 15.5
Asian: 6.1
Black: 65.2

Chicago:

White: 2.1
Hispanic: 11.0
Asian: 1.0
Black: 37.6

New York City:

White: 1.4
Hispanic: 5.9
Asian: 1.5
Black: 14.6

Hispanic blacks are counted as hispanics for New York City, dunno if the other cities even have a large population of hispanic blacks. For Oakland and Chicago numbers are 2009-2011, New York City, just 2011. For more violent cities such as Baltimore, even if all the murder victims were blacks, the black murder rate would still be lower than Oakland (around 47).

It's amazing to see Oakland even outpace Chicago in homicide rate. I would not have thought that given Chicago's high numbers the past couple of years.

Didn't Chicago have a whopping 500 homicides last year?

I think tad over. So I thought Oakland's homicide rate would have been lower just because of the high total for Chicago, but then again you have to remember Oakland's population is only around 395,000, while Chicago's population is nearly 3 million.

Oakland's total of 130 is actually extraordinarily high for a city of its size.

BUT, the poorer ghetto black residents of Lakeview, San Francisco have been steadily getting pushed out of San Francisco city limits slowly since the mid 90's. Today, recent Asian American immigrants represent majority status in what was once a black majority neighborhood from the 60's through the early 90's. Because of this, the high crime of the past decades in the area has dramatically decreased although it is still somewhat of an issue. The same thing is happening in Hunter's Point.

Decaying housing projects are demolished and moneyed Asian and white people buy up old Victorians that were once occupied by working class black folks. With a influx of moneyed lighter skinned folks moving into the neighborhood, police presence goes up and the quality of life dramatically increases as liquor stores are replaced with Whole Foods and organic markets. San Francisco has lower income black people cornered in the projects. When the time is right, those projects are torn down and the undesirable black ghetto element leaves The City entirely. Strict gang injunctions set almost entirely along racial lines also keep the relatively small criminally inclined ghetto population places in SF like Hunter's Point and Fillmore in check.

Oakland's high crime areas in the East and West are seeing much less gentrification comparatively. Most people from outside of the Bay Area are scared of Oakland because of what they've heard through the media. Much of deep East Oakland is still overwhelmingly black and lower middle class to lower income. This isn't changing anytime soon.
you talk about sf losing black population and do not seem to be aware that blacks made up 47% of oaklands population in the 1980 cencus and have now decreased to 27%. you equate loss of black population with gentrification but ignore it when it occurs in oakland.

uptown ,temescal and jack london square are gentrifying.
that east and west oakland have not gentrified much does not discount the nationally recognized dining and entertainment scene occuring in these areas.

I never said Oakland wasn't gentrifying as a whole, I've never claimed that, and never will. All areas eventually gentrify, even in Oakland, mostly to the detriment of low income blacks in Oakland if we want to be honest, but that's a whole other topic.

I actually spend lots of money in Oakland in the areas where bullets aren't ringing out, and drug dealers are hanging out on the corner. I think Uptown, Rockridge are safe, and I even posted about a new bistro I found in Oakland just a week ago.

So I'm not sure where your assumptions about my take on Oakland are coming from.

Yes, but Chicago has 872,286 Blacks. Oakland has 106,637 Blacks. It has more to do with murders per 100,000.

Yeah. The homicide RATE is more telling than the totals.
