Can be forced to search nearly all over the store for a basket, or worse yet, unable to find one. In this situation have three choices; take a cart, find the items and carry them by hand, or just turn around and leave. This no hand basket situation has been encounterd in just about all types of stores, grocery as well as general merchandise retail, including, of course, Walmart.
People DO steal those hand baskets. Yesterday I watched a woman go through self checkout with a full basket of knitting yarn. She didn't bother putting them in bags but back in the basket and then walked right out with it! Recently the store got a big bunch of them but I notice the stacks are getting shorter all the time. If you can't find one by the entrance check out the registers closest to the doors. I'm betting you'll find one...or more. We can't leave to take them back so they pile up and, in truth, it's an unsafe thing to do. People could fall over them or something. It would be nice if we could train our customers to drop them off when they leave.

Just when I thought I had seen it all-----------------I noticed only one older lady at the........20 items or less...........checkout, so I wheeled my cart with 9 items in behind her.

The old lady ( looked to be late 70's) had nearly a cartfull.

She would count exactly 20 items off and state she wanted it rung up.

She did that about 4 times and said she needed 4 separate sales slips because it was for 4 different people.

Strange that each person she " shopped " for had exactly 20 items on the order and none of the items were the same as the other " customer"

The old lady had a smug smile on her face as she looked back at me.
I really wanted to tell her off, but I realized she probably was some kids grandma or great grandma.

A conniving one, at that !

Not a very smart gramma since she went through all that for just about nothing.
The stores that would have made her leave the line are just about non-existent.
But it probably made her feel like she pulled off some wonderful devious coup...all the excitement she needed for the day.
Being 'old' shouldn't give anyone an excuse . It's very likely she wasa selfish, entitled, inconsiderate ***** when she was younger and never outgrew it.

I don't think it should matter. Most people don't use them if they have a full cart. I don't like getting fussed at cause I have 23 things, and am quick about checking and bagging

Yes, there are a couple of registers that are posted with 20-items signs, and often, people will unload a full cart onto the belt. The cashier is not permitted to direct the shopper to one of the other registers. And the people in line behind the miscreant are mumbling and grumbling.

Guess who takes the heat? Right, the cashier. I think that the sign should state:

"This is a 20-item-limit line. If you insist on checking out here with more than 20 items, a penalty of 20% of your total bill will be added to the charge. Automatically. Or you can be courteous and step to another line."

Yes, I know it will never happen, and I know the store doesn't want to lose a customer, but perhaps they're already losing the customers who are forced to wait in what they thought was an express lane.

I spend far too much time wondering whatever happened to civility.
Correct! It isn't just Walmart - - - it's just an excuse for a few posters to bash Walmart.

Our 20 items or less were replaced with more self checkouts. I never ever "fussed" at anyone who had more than 20, and didn't mind checking them out, most of the time. The one exception that I can remember was the guy who actually had 72 items! I didn't count them but checked the total on the receipt. I told him that had to be a record for me! He said he didn't 'see the sign'. Sure he did. He just didn't care.
