Why not? What's wrong with having divisions?

Play offs and relegation would add a cracking end of season and give smaller towns and cities the chance to shine.

I never said that. That's not the reasoning. It just isnt practical to make that kind of change. They changed the alignment many times over the first several seasons and it damaged the natural building of rivalries. Now, rivalries have started to develop naturally and divisions would damage some of those. The league has talked about the importance of rivalries so they arent going to do something that may damage them. Plus, it just doesnt make sense to divide the teams up anymore like that.

You have absolutely no statistical or factual backing to that statement at all.

First, MLS complies with the FIFA laws of the game so they play the game the rest of the world does.

Second, you seem to think that ALL leagues in the world follow the same system and they dont. Not every country has pro/reg and some do use playoffs. There is not this cookie cutter system that you think everyone follows but MLS.

Third, they have a regular season champion, it is called the Supporter's Shield.

Fourth, having a single table or two conferences matters little to most people. Surveys have shown that - only a small minority of fans are bothered by it and I dont know what it matters that much. If anything, the conferences allow this young league to develop rivalries which take time to develop naturally. If it bothers you that much then you need to find something meaningful to do with your time because you have too much free time.

Fifth, if you think pro/reg would work in the U.S. then you have not even the most basic understanding of business or economic viability that it takes to run one. The new NYCFC team is going to pay 100 million dollars to join MLS on top of having to build a stadium within one of the most expensive cities in the world in addition to the expenses of starting the business and their operating budget while they lose money the first few years. This probably will cost them several hundred million. Do you think that ownership group or any other ownership group is going to pay several hundred million dollars to join a league and then risk that entire investment by the chance of being demoted to what Americans would see as the "minor leagues"? Our culture is different here because of our sports history and multiple divisions on a professional level is not part of it. Americans view everything less than the top league as "minor league" or "semi-pro". They do not follow or support those clubs on the level that they support professional leagues. Even on the collegiate level, Division II on does not receive even close to the following as Division I does. MLS teams now have 20k seat stadiums to fill and pay for, an annual operating budget of tens of millions of dollars, and debt to pay. Anyone of those teams that would get relegated would end up folding because there revenue would get cut drastically as attendance gets cut by 50% or more.

No, it isnt common sense at all. It is not nearly as simple as you seem to think it is. The business infrastructure of making such a move seems to be beyond your comprehension level.

Let me put it this way:

You purchase a new Mercedes for $60k with a down payment of like 5K plus money payments of like $800. Then, new few months into it, the dealership comes along and says, if you dont drive the car well enough compared to other Mercedes drivers, we will take your car and give you a 1974 Ford Pinto but you still have to make the same $800 dollar payment for the Mercedes. What would you say because thats about what happens to the owners of existing MLS teams.

For the potential expansion teams, this is about what they hear when they walk into the dealership. Any reasonable person would turn around and leave and take their money somewhere else.

How would that hurt rivalries? If anything it would strengthen them. We would still have the Western and Eastern Conferences, it would just consist of different divisions that's all.

That should be the risk you have to take. If the MLS wants to compete with other football leagues, its gonna have to adapt to the way the other leagues play the game.

No - not it doesn't

again -a completely baseless comment

the game is the same .... the rest is business and you have to run a business that works in your business climate

the economics simply wouldn't function and it would bankrupt teams, hamper the league and diminish value in markets they need to shine to have any hope at all of ever getting favorable TV contracts (which is a big important factor of having the yankees involved in this 2nd team - i'm sure the yes network is going to be involved ..... the yankees side currently says they haven't really gotten into it - but you know it's something that has been a big talking point - product distribution is huge and they have an incredible infrastructure right now in delivering their sports product and they have talked of "multiple synergies" ....... they have done a tremendous job at leverging their owned broadcasting platform so far - even teams that get good distribution on their Fox Sports, Comcast Sportsnet or similiar local station are at a disadvantage as it's still someone elses network

I imagine not only games will be on Yes but they'll have a whole host of complementary programming used to market the team

If the league wants to one day compete with other leagues, its gonna have to adapt to the way the game is mostly played. Winning the championship wont mean nothing if it can be won by the same teams every year. The talent that will be on display in the MLS will leave for a better league.

The MLS needs to keep growing but it will soon need to bring in a promotion/relegation system.
