Not sure what that picture is meant to show. Those fans are if anything Far Left. Soccer in America is a sport for young hipsters in big metro areas. 90% of them are “liberal” or even more leftist.
Thats the "Wonderwall" too. Friend goes to every game, said there is guys handing out Nazi propaganda at nearly every match, The Dark Clouds I think theyre called.. But it only happens in Europe. Cause America can and will bury its head.
They are obviously politicized, but Far Left. The logo with the three arrows pointing towards the bottom left is taken from a Socialist organization of the Weimar Republic.
I have heard that there's some Far Right supporters groups in MLS, but 99% of what I've seen shows either no politics or left-wing politics (i.e. rainbow flags, 'refugees welcome' banners, Antifa logos etc.).
Most American soccer fans just imitate European fans...but not the far right style of Lazio or Eastern European clubs, more like the super-leftist style of St.Pauli or Livorno.
I've seen this ESPN piece more than once, and I think it probably gives the impression that such incidents happen more often than they actually do. Certainly it does happen on occasion, however. Most recently, it seems that Chelsea's Didier Drogba has been the target of monkey chants (UEFA May Investigate Alleged Racial Abuse Of Chelsea's Didier Drogba - Report - Goal.com (http://www.goal.com/it/news/139/ital...eas-didier-dro - broken link)). It is mostly certainly dreadful and disgusting behavior, and its existence causes me to scratch my head anytime Europeans try to lecture us on racist behavior. As you pointed out, that kind of stuff just doesn't happen in modern America. I don't recall ever hearing of such an inicident in my 40 years.
Good comment. I'm half Norwegian and live in Norway. I love football. It's not as common as the American media tends to make it out. I mean I'm not saying it doesn't happen. It does. But it's not as bad as the sensationalist media make it out. Particularly in Western Europe. Eastern Europe, however, is quite a different story. Like in Russia, yah, black players suffer there.
