I well remember that first moon landing. We watched it my high school class here in Australia and we thought it was pretty exciting! I think we were also excited that we got to miss a Maths or Physics lesson or two.
It would also require that the tens of thousands of people from all over the world who would have known about it kept their mouths completey shut - never told a single soul, not ONE of them - for their entire lives.

In reality, yes that would be possible, when it comes down to the very important stuff, Govt is EXTREMELY good at keeping things secret. Look at how long it took with the JFK stuff, new information never came out until the documents had to released to the public, thats a pretty good effort by everyone involved that knew this stuff, NOT A SINGLE ONE leaked info over all that time!!!
Then you have the whole alien/ UFO thing, they are extremely good at keeping the important details secret, and over decades and decades of time, lots of different people and agencies coming and going in between, not to mention all the other world govts that also have this same info, they work together to ensure nothing big gets out, that alone is amazing, that many people, over so many years, can keep something that big a secret.
is truly painful. Why didn't we go back, build that laboratory, and have a semi-permanent presence on the moon. I'll tell you why. The reason is that we have leaders (of both parties in the USA and in many other countries, too) that have ZERO vision. ZIP. NADA! And we pay for it big time.
This is but one of countless examples of how much we pay for it, how much we lose because of it. We got to the threshold . . . and even took one AMAZING step through the door to becoming an advanced civilization spread across multiple worlds. But idiot leaders called us back and shut the door. Since then human-staffed flight has just been circling the planet. Circling the drain?
I want even discuss the hoax theory, it's too silly.
But the vision - back then, in 1969, we had a vision for a manned flight to Mars by 1984. It was an exciting time to be living in Central Florida, I remember traveling to Cape Kennedy to see the massive Saturn V rockets take off. Lack of long term vision doomed the space program - politicians didn't see the return, the votes out of it. The return was there, the space program spinned off tons of technology, but people could not connect the dots.

People who worked on the Manhattan Project had no idea what they were creating, were all compartmentalized and in different locations.
Just saying, that yes it is possible for people not to completely understand what is going on around them or what they are actually working on. they may believe or not believe, or may be told something that isn't true, or only have 10% of all the information.
It does happen.

Bad analogy. A better one would be that the US explodes an atomic bomb over Japan and keeps it secret for 50 years.
Not knowing what your building? Fine. Hiding the empirical evidence of using it? Not possible. The Soviets were tracking Apollo all the way to the moon. So was Jodrell Bank.
