I count only 4 true northern cities, three in Michigan. One in the west(CA), Four in the north(MI,NJ), four in the middle(TN,MO,southernIL,DE) and one in the south(LA).

Depends on what year you pull up.

Metro areas are much telling if you are attempting to gauge whole regions.
