What is Utah really like? I'm moving to Utah from California. Are the people really racist? I'm an African-American of light skin complexion. I've been to Utah before and rarely see Black people. However, I have seen more and more Latinos in SLC County and Utah County.....HELP!

I also moved to SLC from CA (L.A.) and you have nothing to worry about. Everybody here is very accepting and I've never seen a single instance of racism nor any mormom/anti-mormon issues at all. The only controversy I see is HERE, in this internet forum, which means people like to create more drama than really exists in life. Such is life on the web.

You should be fine. The only place in Utah I've heard of racism being a problem is out in the boonies
SLC and the rest of the metro areas are becoming more diverse every day. |

Like what has already been posted, Utah is not racist, you'll be fine. It's actually pretty cool to see someone in Utah who is not white or hispanic. I think you'll get positive attention. Maybe they'll even want to take your picture and put it on one of the local magazines "Come to Utah....the land of diversity"

Check out the "Is Utah racist????? thread. It should answer your question thoroughly. As I tell everyone.... please don't judge the place, based off of a few opinions on an internet forum. Go and see for yourself. Firsthand experience is what you should go by.
Good luck. |

We are not as diverse racially as Cali, but we are not racist either, not most of us anyways.

Stop in the southern end of the state and I personally will give you the guided tour. I'm so white I glow in the dark. None of the people I know are racitst, and I know quite a few in this end of the state.

Having lived in Utah several years in the 90's I would say it depends where you relocate..If its anywhere between Salt Lake & Provo you should be fine but anything north or south of there, not so sure..Much more conservative and although for the most part everyone seems tolerant, what they say behind closed doors is another matter.

SLC is the best. I am from California. Moved to St. George 3 years ago. Big mistake! Wages are low and high cost of living anywhere in UTAH! However, as to your question, if I were you, I would move to SLC. Now as far as something more important then religion and race. Before you make the move to Utah...Did you know that there is NO state disability in Utah? Also, most employers do not provide the full package of medical benefits and it is a right to work state. Which means, the employer can terminate you without cause at anytime and no 15 min breaks or lunches. They do not have to provide vacation, sick time, medical insurance and one more thing..waiters get paid 2.15 per hour!!!! YES, IN DEED! Administration jobs start at 9.00 per hour and teachers 12.00 per hour. I would reseach the job market in SLC, I understand it just a bit higher wage but not by much. Do your homework first. Utah is a Mormon state and they decide what your worth....cheap salary.
