I saw a carpet fitter once using TIPPEX to paint over damage he had done to the skirting board, and the owner of the house asked me what I thought of the Carpet fitter. ( The owner I admit was a posh Londoner). I said he was a credit to their company, a true proff. I just couldn't do it.

Why would we expect nations as large as the US and Canada. Not to have accent differences? Even I know the Alberta accent. The US has the Southern one in different versions. Texas differs from Mississippi. Even within states, cities and no doubt Provinces too. The Brooklyn one and Boston one.
Look at all the British Isle ones. I usually can tell a Aussie from a Brit. But not always.
Surely a European can tell a Southern American Accent from a Canadian or Northern US one? But a Canadian and Northern American one? By what they hear on TV shows? I doubt too much?

The United States doesn't have a very large amount of accents for its size and I find the more as time goes on the more the accents absorb. For me I can identify the following accents:
1. NYC/North Jersey.
2. Tennessee.
3. West coast, i'm not sure what area it is but every time I hear it on tv I know its from the West coast.
4. The South.
5. Chicago.

I mean, could you tell a Venezuelan accent from a Panamanian? Probably not. To many ESL learners, English just sounds like English, and it takes a long time to differentiate the different accents and dialects

I would love to see what foreign people see the accent as. Like can they differentiate between Irish and English etc.
