(I've heard fom many brazilians that they've been told that they "don't look brazilian", whatever it means, in Europe too. But also in USA.)
To most Americans "Latino / Hispanic = Mexican (someone who is usually half Spanish and half Native American). When you explain that there are millions of Japanese or Middle Easterners in Latin America they seem confused.

And previous US treasurers, and judges (Curiel, made famous by DTrump), and more. But, these people dont exist in Hollywood movies and stories, they are stuck using the same formulas from the 1950s. The only people who can change that are actual Latinos working in Hollywood, people who create their own projects (Jennifer Lopez, America Ferrera, Salma Hayek, etc...)

Hollywood is PACKED with Hispanics since the 20's. I'm not that old, but I have heard of Ramon Novarro, Valentino, Rita Hayworth, Anthony Quinn and hundreds more.
As Hollywood sells image, many Hispanic actors changed their names to fit in different roles.
I guess that the largest proportion of actors, scripwriters and producers are Jewish, names changed, also many foreigners.
In fact Hollywood was created by Austrian Jews.
In fact, Latin (white) looking people were favoured by the industry during a large period, and many actors coloured their hair to look like Valentino.

Some of best English actors had or have dark hair, as it was in fashion during a certain period.

Most actors are not "wasp" either, they can be Bulgarian Jews and made to look like a redneck kid from Kansas. Hollywood sells image. Many "Latin" actors, but caucasian.

Hollywood did transform actors into Chinese characters, so go and figure.

Americans usually assume most Brazilians are Black or mixed with Black. Maybe because of Carmen Miranda and Pele. The newer generations have the Victorias Secret models as references, so that may be changing.

Default blame tv

because many people only know america from hollywood, and that has little to do with the real country.

hollywood-all americas live in either manhattan or LA and a few in chicago in the 80's
reality-most people dont live those 3 cities.
hollywood-all americans are upper/middle class and are white
reality-most americans are middle class and the white race make up 63%
hollywood-nobody goes to church
reality- america is on of the most religious countries in the world
hollywood- people live in apts or houses that are way beyond there economic means.kramer on seinfeld doesnt even have a job but lives in a very nice NYC apt.
hollywood- the weather is always perfect
reality- endless tornadoes/hurricanes/ blistering hot sticky humid summers and bitterly cold winters.
hollywood- america is all big cities full of very liberal progressive people.
reality- most of america is rural towns in the middle of farm country and is full of people who are very conservative and are still living in the 1950's, remember mississippi still had slavery on the book until 1995!!!!

Carmen Miranda wasn't mixed she was born in Portugal to ethnically Portuguese parents but she was raised in Brazil.

Yes, actually I was rebutting the initial question because the OP seems to think that this kind of thing only happens in Europe.

Still, brazilians who commented that they have being said that they did not look like brazilians were often white with portuguese ancestry or blacks, that together make up more than 90% of the population.
