Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

I-69 Update: Houston Finally Clinched, And That's Huge

Posted 03-26-2015 at 04:01 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

As you've seen me writing for many months about this, you can all tell that I've been impatiently waiting. I wondered if it was ever going to come along.

Reports from the Texas Transportation Commission are in, and it is now official: Interstate 69 is now complete through the city of Houston. I can't even begin to tell you that this is huge! In a matter of weeks and months, you'll start seeing the red, white, and blue shields emblazoned on overhead signs and new assurance...

And I Thought Spring Would Never Get Here

Posted 03-24-2015 at 08:58 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

It's here at last! What I've waited all winter for: 84 degrees outside. Woo-hoo!!

No more blasts of Old Man Winter. Certainly when the temperature reaches 84 anywhere in Texas, you can bet that there won't be snow or ice until.............well, .........next winter. Spring has sprungeth nigh, the sun was out today, and baseball is almost here. As a matter of fact, I just got back from a high school baseball game in Frisco, Texas, where the fields...

Beyond The Barbecue Belt: The Texas 'Cue Expansion

Posted 03-11-2015 at 05:48 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

In some of Texas' most revered barbecue havens, you'd never think that those "one-shot deals" would ever multiply. After all, many folks would be afraid that the quality of the food might suffer if places such as Kreuz Market, Southside Market, Louie Mueller's, and Cooper's would expand their reaches beyond the notches of the Texas Barbecue Belt.

Well, in the last few years, guess what? It's happened.

Take a look at this article.

That Grand Old Flag: Old Glory Must Still Fly

Posted 03-11-2015 at 04:51 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

There's nothing grander, bolder, or stronger than the greatest symbol of patriotism in existence today, and that's the American flag. You can drive through many a small town (or even some larger ones) and see Old Glory proudly displayed on short poles in front of people's houses, business offices, cafés, and storefronts. You'll also see them flying high on flagpoles above your state's flag at many schools, hospitals, government offices, and institutions. Just like mom, baseball,...

The Novelty Song: Is It On The Way Out?

Posted 03-09-2015 at 03:14 AM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

Through the years, it used to be a frequent thing to hear pieces of lyric and music called novelty songs in the music world. They'd be all over the place and would often refer to an event or particular person, and often with comic effect. Many times, they would be parodies of classics or original works. Back in the '60s and '70s, they were ever-present that you couldn't miss them.

Nowadays, if you turn on your radio, you don't hear these things on pop stations...
