Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Wade Jessen (1961 - 2015): A Huge Loss For Willie's Roadhouse

One of the reasons I started liking and subscribing to Sirius XM was the amount of choices and the variety among same. And a big part of my car's listening pleasure happens to be a channel called Willie's Roadhouse (XM Channel 59). Their format is classic country music, which just happens to be my niche.

They've had a fine staff of deejays down through the years, and still do. One of those regulars had been Wade Jessen, a Nashville jock who'd been with Willie's Roadhouse...

When It Comes To Winter, The Heat Is On

Posted 03-03-2015 at 07:34 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

Let's just say it needs to end, with or without the calendar. Tomorrow's weather forecast calls for another round of sleet. That's five such incidents in two weeks. When is enough enough for Old Man Winter?

It's time for spring, don't you think?

As much as I've been thinking about baseball, so, too, goes the thought of seeing green. Green grass, green leaves, green..........

Well, you get the idea.

Instead,...

If There Were A Town Of Nowhere, Then Could It Be In Texas?

Sometimes in America, when you travel or even read travel books, you'll occasionally come across things that are bizarre or unusual. Different tourist attractions take on their own purposes and, in some cases, personalities with the likes of many travelers.

I've previously mentioned funny or silly town names in a previous post, but I won't repeat the details in this latest chickenscratch. I'd like to narrow things down to one item this time. For a number of years,...

Postcards From The Road: Final Trip Thoughts

Posted 02-20-2015 at 08:33 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

Well, as John Denver would sing in his old song, it's good to be back home again. But I didn't want it to end too quickly. Anyhow, here are a few thoughts:

In College Station, work is being done on a large exhibit at the George Bush Presidential Library. So much so, that the entire section was blocked off from the public. I was hoping they'd actually add something there; instead, my second visit in six years yielded less things to see....

My...

Case's Vacation Journal: Good Food To Be Had....

Posted 02-17-2015 at 03:54 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

....with more still to come. It had been a long time coming for me to try a Central Texas legend in steak. So, last night, your writer decided it had become time to try out Heitmiller's.

While this will not be a formal food review post, I can tell you that this place gets an A-plus for its food. The steak was at its charbroiled best, full of flavor. Had a ribeye, and it was just the right amount of marbling. Also a wonderful baked potato which had bacon bits,...
