Yes. I suffered for 27 years with migraines, nausea, sometimes fainting, abdominal pains, and excessive gas because all the doctors throughout those years of my life apparently didn't know what Celiac disease is.

Also, four years ago I ended up in the ER because my heart wasn't acting right. The cardiologists performed a bunch of tests, concluded I had superventricular tachycardia & arrhythmia, put me on metoprolol tartate, and kept suggesting I get a surgical procedure of destroying the heart tissue that they thought was causing the tachycardia. The metoprolol then gave me brachycardia, hallucinations (which I didn't mind), shortness of breath, arthritis in my knees and an elbow, and weird bouts of overemotional behavior & depression. After some more testing, two cardiologists said they didn't understand what was happening to my heart, and one of them implied the previously suggested procedure of destroying the heart tissue at fault (I can't recall the term of the procedure) would have been a mistake. In other words, I could have ended up needing a pacemaker!

I got fed up with their incompetence, did a lot of reading about my heart problems, then self-medicated with hawthorn berries and more exercise. The hawthorn berries helped a lot better than that terrible metoprolol junk they had me on, and my heart hasn't been giving me problems these past few years.

I wouldn't have even gone to the ER if the problem wasn't so serious without any other alternatives. I'm reluctant to go to the hospital, not only because of all the incompetence of so many doctors but also because in 2010 I went to the ER for throbbing back pain that I thought might be kidney pain, and after tests the doctor had a psychiatrist talk to me then force me into their psychiatric ward against my will. While in their psychiatric ward, I found out from one of the secretaries or an intern that I was in there for "being suicidal"! The psychiatrist had me in there based on a lie! I had to threaten them with a lawsuit to get interviews then released with apologies.

My gosh, 3rd Gen, what a tale of medical malarkey you were subjected to! Glad you got to the bottom of your medical challenges.

While I think there are terrific allopathic docttrs who care and know how to diagnose, it seems harder and harder to find them...hasn't it turned into a numbers games--get 'em in, get ''em out--take this pill?

It's become much more a personal repsonsibility to investigate--and sometimes treat, as you did, our own medical challenges while doing the least harm. That's often through trying alternative methods. Sure if you've a broken bone, or an appendix about to rupture, you need allopathic medicine.

But, as your situation has proved, many other maladies respond very well to either time or natural healing modalities.

Today, it's becoming the norm for the practice of "Physician, heal thyself" with the physican being ourselves.

I agree. An individual experiencing the pain or discomfort has more interest in finding answers about their ailment(s) than someone else who doesn't have any connection to experiencing their sufferance ever could.

I think some primary reasons so many of the conventional doctors are so incompetent is because they're limited to conventional medicine, limited to only what the AMA permits them to do, limited by insurance plans, limited in what they learned, have little experience outside their specific specialty, and are really only interested in their salary without really caring about competence.

Beside major surgical procedures and getting broken bones set, I'd go to a conventional doctor for an opiate pain relief medicine prescription if I had a condition that results in unbearable pain. Other than that, alternative medicine and naturopathy is my choice and much cheaper.

Alternative/unconventional medicine can also sometimes be the only option as a lot of doctors only treat the symptoms of health problems. The old joke of doctors telling patients to "take two aspirins and call me in the morning" is so true in conventional Western medicine even these days.

Yes, I absolutely agree with the posters here. I go to a doctor for blood work, and I will listen to what they say, and then determine my own course.

As I said in another thread:
in the Enlightenment, all notion of god, consciousness, soul, mind, spirit - was removed from medicine.

They thought this made medicine more effective.
yet now we have neurobiology which proves the interaction of body and mind,
which proves that the body is not a machine.
still medicine continues as if we are machines with replaceable parts.

That is one of the big things wrong with modern medicine- they have removed consciousness from it, removed the role we can play in our own healing.

And the political/economic system supports this wrong thinking.
I can sum up what is wrong in this simple example:
I got a prescription for xanax (I use it very sparingly for insomnia), cost me $1.50!

Acupuncture - which allows me to sleep naturally, and which has all-around health benefits, costs me $70 - $125.00 and is not reimbursed by Medicare.

But xanax - which is extremely addicting - is.

Oooh me loves it when an older thread gets revived! Thanks for this.

Heck yes. Me knows more.

After years of misdiagnose, expensive invasive test/procedures and countless expensive NON WORKING prescriptions, I had enough and began my own health journey.

Beginning with food and nutrition. Filtered water to clean out lead, floride and chlorine.

Cleaned up my personal products with as much natural and nonsynthetic ingredients I could find.

Health sleep. Exercise. Unloading toxic people from my life.

I am happy to report I am OFF of the sinus medications, migraine meds, stomach/digestion medications, never filled the statin prescription given to me only because I was reaching a certain age, and will never agree to being injected with questionable ingredients that are known to cause harm to humans, etc. (I have heard rumors that sometimes research is faked and lied about only to sell massive quantities of the medicines. Even numbers that show the drugs are working are sometimes lied about in order to sell sell sell. Might want to get a book: Rockefeller Medicine Men. It's enlightening to say the least)

My BP is great, my stomach has healed, migraines are so infrequent and mild, etc. I have MORE ENERGY TOO. I did recently discover that my uric acid is low thru blood work that I ORDER, and I am off to seek a professional for their wisdom and info.

I just wish I had begun a healthier lifestyle sooner

Default another good book:

"The Truth about the Drug Companies" by Marcia Angell.

The author is former editor-in-chief of the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine.
talks about the corruption and fraud in the drug industry and research.

Oh I believe it!

Had an odd thing occur in 06 when I was found to have a multinodular thyroid -- saw SIX different specialists.

Each of them (after waiting up to an hour in waiting rooms to see), would read the original report, touch my throat - and say "Surgery to rule out cancer." Each.and.every.one.

I began my research into oral/topical iodine (Lugol's/Iodoral). 10 years later with NO SURGERY TO RULE OUT CANCER, I am happy to report great levels of thyroid hormones, amazing energy and barely visible goiter.

that's terrific.

It takes guts to resist the knife esp. with threat of the Big C.

and it takes determination to do your own research.
but it's worth it.

I once had a doctor tell me I needed surgery for hemorrhoids.
He never asked me if I was constipated, or about my diet.

This was decades before the Internet, and decades before i knew much about doctors or health.

Fortunately I told someone in a health food store about the doctor's diagnosis and treatment- the person asked me about my diet. Turned out I had been constipated, and didn't know it. I corrected my diet and about 3 decades later, have never been bothered with hemorrhoids.
