Juvenal Sansó. He is of Catalan origin. Was born in Catalonia but moved to the Philippines when he was 5. He also studied in Europe, but always came back to the Philippines.
I heard that he and Henry Sy were good friends and that the Sy family are patrons of his art.
I think Michiko is having a hard time distinguishing Filipino citizens of European ancestry descended from colonial settlers versus the people who have a white foreign parent since Indonesia has largely expelled their Dutch "creole" population during Bersiap.
Most Filipinos of non-foreign European descent are in the business sector while people who have one foreign parent are the ones who are more visible due to their high presence in the entertainment industry and beauty pageants plus their inclination to say they are have this. Meanwhile, Filipinos who descended from the colonial settlers don't announce their non-native ancestry. They just say they are Filipinos.
One has to really pay attention to the Manila High Society and not entertainment to know these colonial-descended Filipino families since most of them are part of the old rich.
Yeah I think for most old-money Spanish families, being in entertainment would be considered “beneath” them. That’s why you see more half Filipinos in the entertainment industry rather than Spanish-Filipinos. There are exceptions of course. There are some Spanish-Filipinos in the entertainment industry and not all Spanish-Filipinos come from wealthy old money families.
^^ But most in the industry are mixed with natives. The whitest ones, like the Aboitiz (at least the white side of the family. Some of their family members are already native-looking like Marga Aboitiz (wife of the son of JAZA) )are in business.
But these white Pinoys will be gone in two or three generations as they are marrying rich natives.
This is what sets them apart from their counterparts in Latin America. The creoles over there are racist, they just won't admit it. In the Philippines, they're just classist. Lol
