I don't know any European that is afraid of Russia. The Russia-phobia is the result of anti-Russian plots that have never ceased, not even during the Gorbachev years, when Russia was stabbed in the back by the West.
I couldn't care less about them yet calling it "stabbed in the back" is some sort of alternative interpretation. They just don't matter in the 20s this millenia as much as they did in the 80s from the last millenia, period.
China are sort of the new Soviet Union, seen as a brake by America and a land with many resources too. In fact with the collapse of the SU America was hoping to get a hold on their resources, namely oil: they succeeded in EE but not in Russia which is the only reason why american news won't shut up about russia while it ignores the rest of the former SU.
I am not so sure about that. At first glance it might look like it, but in reality Russia is doing much better now than it ever was during Soviet times. They are rid of problematic Soviet states and can thus focus on Russia only. They have very little debt, their economy is becoming more and more independent and self-sufficient, ironically, thanks to the sanctions. Plus, they are buddies with China now, there are many joint developments for instance in aviation.
And of course they won't give up an inch of their territory including resources. They have the means to defend themselves.
Interestingly, they admit that Beijing/Xi does not really know the extent of the epidemic, either, because lower-level authorities are reporting wrong numbers to Beijing.
Still, all that whining about China's numbers is a childish red herring. Any mediocre expert in the West should have known what was coming. Especially in view of previous epidemics that started in China.

The numbers coming out of China are fishy to say the least. On the other hand, I do agree that the West should have taken this more seriously.

It looks even more suspicious now that the Pentagon and the CIA are denying the report. Known facts contradict the report or cast suspicion of the role in the epidemic played by those leaking the report.
If the ABC report was accurate and no one else was really aware of the impending breakout of the disease, it looks like US intelligence played a role in it, whether it validates the claim by some Chinese that US military medical officers were involved in seeding the epidemic during the World Army Games.
