I think that is obvious, my question is the hype real or blown out of proportion. I'd hate to write off public transportation unfairly.

No. The way that he stated it I had no idea what he meant.

And it's obvious there's more crime outside of MARTA stations than inside them. That's common sense. However, 3 murders within a year is unacceptable for any transit system. If MARTA can't maintain reasonable control of what happens in the relatively small areas they're responsible for then people have every right to raise hell about it.

I saw some MARTA cops today and by the looks of them I doubt they would have been able to do much good if they had actually been at the scene of the crime.

It depends what time you take the train if it is during the peak hours you will be among other business/educated people. Off peak you get the riff raff. Same in NYC, the NJ transit north east corridor train is all professionals during peak hours and off peak you have people peeing, vomiting, masturbating, harassing women and acting loud and obnoxious. PATH is the same.

I personally think MARTA trains and stations are relatively safe, with a few possible exceptions. However, they do have an image problem.

Five Points is grungy and an embarrassment to the city. It's been like that for way too long, in my opinion, and I think that has discouraged visitors and businesses in the area. The station's tomb-like appearance was a disappointment from the get-go. Goodness, can't they just put up some glass cube or a cool looking slanted roof to give the place a little pizazz? And streetside it's a mess. Those fake pocketbook vendors and juice stands and the trash on the street make the area look junky.

I wonder how common your apparent attitude is? Maybe it explains the issues we're seeing with the MARTA police ... they don't really care, either.

Having lived in a city with true public transportation, I was highly critical of MARTA service. Nevertheless, when I moved closer to a station and my need to go downtown frequently increased, I gave MARTA a chance. Unforunately, increase crime, constant stalls, limited security inside AND outside the station, and fare increases have brought back the same distaste I previously had for MARTA.

To the commenter that mentioned that the police huddle around the front of the station or often even parked outside the station are spot on. In over a year riding the N/S line and East line, I've seen a patrol on the platform three times.

A successful, safe expansion will require continuous police patrol and enforcement.
