UNC is obviously closer to the northeast and more of those students are willing to go there than farther south to a small town like Auburn. Their "selectivity" is more about their location than being a superior college.
This perception is not supported by the evidence. Regardless, I don't believe a kid has to go a top tier school to get a great education and have a great "college experience".

Ha. HAHAHAHA! This is not accurate.

Your evidence is US News and World Report rankings. I don't know you are an expert on UNC, given you didn't go there. I'd want to get paid to advertise for UNC or any college though.

You joined city data just to post that...?

How long have you been waiting to say that?

It is amusing how emotional people get, people who did not even go to the "prestigious" college, when somebody argues a UNC is overhyped. People live and die by the US News and World Rankings.

If I worked for UNC I would be laughing at how people are so willing to tout a program they have nothing to do with. I don't advertise unless I get paid for it.

I have a boatload of family and friends in NC. Kids with straight As in AP classes, highly competitive test scores, the right ECs, parents who are alumni, well-connected friends, etc. have not gotten into UNC. I don't evaluate the quality of a university based on US News, I am not emotional over a random stranger's comment on the internet. But for any kids out there contemplating UNC, esp. if you are out-of-state, unless your kid has a stellar application you may want to save the $ and apply elsewhere.

LOL! I guess the reputation of the sororities varies from campus to campus. My daughter is definitely not into that scene. She told me at Arkansas, the KKG stands for Kappa Kappa Grandma. They are seen as more downhome but academically excellent group there.

At least that's how she sold me

But she has made the best of her situation, going straight into the graduate program in Speech Pathology. Couldn't be prouder. Given her great record and signs of maturity I do trust her. Waiting a year, she got to see them all in action and got a good handle on what each group stood for.

There is a surprising draw from the north Dallas burbs to Arkansas and Oklahoma State. Seems at both my kids graduations, there were as many going to these schools as were staying in state. Hardly ANY kids going to UT... Most in state were headed to A&M or Tech.

I think trying to rank how good a college is by the average GPA of the high school kids they accept is a joke. High school is mostly memorization and not challenging at all for the brighter kids and there are a lot of bright kids who don't try that hard in high school but when they get into college they are more motivated, partly because they are studying what they are interested in.

As I pointed out, the students who major in engineering are the cream of the crop of high school kids, and they don't even apply to UNC, they go to NC State and UNC Charlotte. You can talk GPA all you want but those liberal arts majors at UNC are cake. Just one man's opinion, don't have a stroke over it.
