One of my daughters was a competitive gymnast from K-12. The other a varsity rower who made it to nationals her senior year. Both Kappas. Their house was filled with soccer, tennis, field hockey, equestrian types. Probably because they are team players who want to be part of a group in college, they tend to be physically "fit," and they are used to competition.

Sororities want young women with accomplishments in a wide variety of areas.

Well in Deliverance, the banjo boy actually never did anything wrong, just played his banjo and he seemed mentally disabled but the movie makes it seem sinister.

All the rest of the smalltown including the cop lets them leave the city after they killed those pyschos. In other words, they understood.

At Clemson, I think there were 4 or 5 frat boys who died of alcohol poisioning or DUI while I was there. There's just too much abuse of alchohol in frats for me, and I hear they are doing drugs like herorin and cocaine these days, and a lot of them abuse Adderall to help them study without having a prescription for it. Adderall is an attention deficit disorder drug.

IMO, parents should really persuade their daughters not to join sororities because that is increasing their chances of being exposed to some pretty bad guys and I can see date rape being a common occurence in the greek system.

I still think most of them were cheerleaders, and a few cross country, tennis, cross country.

You won't see a lot of basketball, softball, or soccer in my view.

I would agree with this.

There is certainly a lot of regionalism in girls' high schools sports. In the north you see a lot of hockey and ski team. The east coast is filled with soccer, lacrosse, field hockey and crew. When I lived in Pacific Palisades, swimming and surfing were big in high school.

In the Atlanta area I see a lot of everything including cheerleading. In North Fulton there are two club rowing teams that attract a lot of girls and some are going to college on rowing scholarships.

At Clemson, the row team is basically like a co-ed greek club and I would doubt any of them are in a frat/sorority in addition.

Wowsers. For an opinion that's a pretty darn strong condemnation. Any studies supporting this?

Just my own observations and hunches. Most frat boys are in the frat to hook up and party (abuse alcohol and possibly other drugs). I don't think it is a stretch to think date rape happens more often in this type of atmosphere. Who knows, I can't prove anything and I don't need to, this isn't a courtroom.

I just googled Greek and date rape and I got a TON of hits. It's not even really date rape because they aren't on a date, it is guys take advantage of girls they hardly know at parties. It's not hard to believe that the kind of thing that happened in a small town in Ohio a copule of years ago is happening quite often at colleges across the country, especially when you factor all the drug abuse.

Somehow this thread deteriorated into greek vs GDI.

There are apparently a lot of sensitive souls on this subject.

I apologize if I seem like a GDI. I am not against frats/sororities. I didn't join one but that was more because I didn't think it would be conducive to studying and I was majoring in mechanical engineering. It wasn't because I was anti-frat though. It def. will help you meet more people in the college in a quicker time simply because you are kind of forced into social contact with all these people. Given you are only in college a short time of 4 years or so it probably isn't the worse thing to do.

I don't think most frat / sorority girls are much different from the rest of the student body but I do think the bad apples tend to be in the greek system. If I had a daughter I really wouldn't feel comfortable with her messing around with the average frat boy, based on my own experiences. A lot of them are amazingly disrespectufl to women too and the sorority girls seem to just kind of accept it. I ended up next to a sorority and frat combined group at a football game and I talked to one of the sorority girls throughout the game and I could tell she did not like those frat guys because they were obnoxious fools. She is now my wife.
