Why is it sad? There are plenty of colleges in GA, and the vast majority of them will admit a B+ student. Those "AP" kids are the ones most qualified for the rigor of college courses. Would you rather see the curriculum dumbed down to the point of having our flagship universities considered lesser quality?

On the positive note, other Colleges and Universities in Georgia have benefited from the fact that UGA and GT have become more difficult to get in.

Mercer is the only other college I applied to outside of Clemson. It's too bad that isn't a public college, I liked it because it is a small school with engineering which you don't see much.

I think Georgia SOuthern would be a fun school too.

G Tech has a prison type of reptutation and UGA seems like the extension of high school for Atlanta kids. LOL

wow

completely disagree. This is exactly what makes us economically competitive. The value of our work force.

However, we can't forget the increasing value of our 2nd and 3rd tier colleges.

They are getting much better fast and a good B+/A- student stands a decent chance of getting in. In many ways they have the academic standing of our top tier colleges a few decades ago.

KSU is emerging as a great school for example.

We also have new colleges fulfilling a large amount of demand, like Georgia Gwinnett College. I expect to see great things from that college in 10-20 years.

Well, it has been hijacked in a way, but will let fruit flavored sodas of a bygone era remained unmentioned...

...But a very interesting topic nonetheless. Don't know if the fierce collegiate competiveness of southerners was more in play or the Greek vs. GDI element caused more of a stir. Two explosive topics for sure.

Well, what is crazy is when an A student with high test scores, and great extra-curriculars, can't get into a top tier college.

The real tragedy is what top tier colleges cost (NYU will set you back $60,000/year for tuition and housing) and how much debt the majority of students pile up.

At the opposite end, we toured Gwinnett Technical College with an amazing campus that was extremely affordable offering a lot of programs and the ability to transfer the first two years of credits to any Georgia college or university.

The specific stories that I have heard about an A student with high test scores not getting into a GT or UGA typically occur when that student is coming from a highly competitive high school.

For example one year, someone close to me did not make it into GT. Admissions noted that although he met their qualifications but he was also coming from Northview High where they had already accept over 60 applicants equally or more qualified.

And no, I don't believe someone less qualified from a less competitive school was accepted. It is simply that schools like GT have more than enough qualified candidates and it is not in their best interest to limit their acceptance to a few selective high schools.

As noted earlier, sometimes the numbers work against you.
