Thanks for the link. That's a prime example why the old standard of waiting until someone passes away before you start naming public monuments for them: You never can be sure of all they will do to sully their name until they are gone to their great reward.

But there are other precedents as well. We all know Gwinnett played to both sides of the aisle with Jimmy Carter Blvd and Ronald Reagan Pkwy. The latter was in place long before his death. Here in the northern burbs of DFW, one of the major east/west toll roads is, in its full name, President George Bush Tollway. In common vernacular it gets shortened to PGBT or just "the Bush Tollway." It got the moniker "President" while it was being built as W was still governor and to differentiate between dad and son as it was named to honor the first. So I guess the powers that be here in TX need to rename it the PGHWBTXLI. LOL.

State officials need to do like the post office and the US Mint and wait till folks pass on before stuff gets named for them.

If you read the article above, you would see that more and more Buckhead residents are sending their kids to the public schools. It started with the six elementary schools and now it is swelling up to Sutton. The high new interest in the public schools will more than likely make its way to the high school in the next 3 to 8 years. This is why there is a need for a second middle school.

This is also following the same pattern that happened in the Inman/Grady Cluster and the City of Decatur.


In my opinion--the next area to follow this pattern...the Toomer Elementary/East Lake Elementary/Coan Middle area (this cluster is already zoned for Grady High...which will probably accelerate things).

I read the article. Just because the elementary schools are growing doesnt necessarily mean the middle school's growth is a result of that. Buckhead is different from Decatur and intown. I knew many people in high school who lived in Buckhead, and who attended smith, brandon or jackson. None of them went to Sutton - thier parents put them in private schools. People in Buckhead dont care about the public schools like they do in Decatur or intown. They would rather pull thier kids out after 5th grade and put them in private school than have their kids be the ones that "transition'' the school. Its just part of the culture in Buckhead.

Im guessing that the growth is from increased busing. They bus to North Atlanta so its nothing new. They will probably bus to the new high school as well.

So your suggesting taking an area and making its residents all attend private schools only. Do property taxes go down then? People all over send their kids to private schools but certainly not everyone.

Sarah Smith, Brandon, and Jackson are 76% white, 86% white, and 78% white, respectively. The 30305 zip code is 91% white. The 30327 zip code (where Sutton is located) is 94% white.

In 2006, Sutton was 35% black. In 2007, Sutton was 40% black.

ok... so the school is supposedly being flooded by children from zip codes that are over 90% white and from schools that are over 75% white... yet the growth has been in the black percentage...

Things do seem to come full circle. When I was in HS (70's), North Fulton High was a good school, and many of my Buckhead friends attended it. I agree with aries in that as Grady is making a comeback in the last few years, it's quite possible this high school could do the same.

And...based on the the boundaries they have now, I would zone Jackson Elementary, Smith Elementary, and Garden Hills Elementary to Sutton Middle; and then Brandon Elementary, Rivers Elementary, and Bolton Academy to Wesley/Peachtree Creek Middle.

(Those involved with the Buckhead schools...ie. residents, etc...would the above suggestion be a good split in y'all's opinion?)

Actually, the present percentages at Sutton are roughly 35-40% White, 30-33% Black, and 25-30% Latino.

This is about a current trend. Yes, Buckhead residents do send their children to private schools in large numbers (which accounts for the discrepancy between the zip code/elementary percentages)...and many always will send their kids to private schools--that's the nature of the wealthy beast. However, no one can doubt the increased interest that Buckhead residents are showing in their public schools.

I'm not sure what you mean by "busing", but the kids who attend North Atlanta live in the North Atlanta zone, as do the Sutton kids. Sutton is currently the only feeder school for N. Atlanta High School. Bolton Academy is included in the North Atlanta zone, and that is predominantly black school. E. Rivers, where my kids attend school, is about 30% black and 30% hispanic.

At E. Rivers Elementary, kids who live in $1M+ houses in Brookwood learn in the same classrooms as the kids who live in trailers on Chattahoochee Ave. Whether we want to see it or not, that is the real world. The mix of cultures is the attraction of the school.

It will be interesting to see what happens when the zoning is announced for the new middle school.
