In TX, I see plenty of people in big ol' Ford F-150's and even F-250's. The best way to describe it is like a person that owns a Swiss Army knife but uses the screwdriver 98% of the time with the other 2% dedicated to it's other functions. If you're a single male living in Dallas or Houston, with a nice 1br apartment in the heart of the city, I'm not sure how useful having a truck is...especially when you're never going to take advantage of its' capabilities more than once a year at most.
Few people NEED the exact car they drive. What is NEEDED about a Corvette? People rarely drive what they need...if they have the money to do it, they drive what they WANT.
How is this news? And why do you spend more than one second even thinking about why others drive what they drive?
I think what the OP is getting at is that people drive Corvettes because they are pretty (ish) and fast. That's their main attraction and it's quite good in that regard. As this thread has uncovered, most truck lovers bought their rides because of the utility of trucks. Trucks are versatile and can be used in many different ways. Trucks (compared to most cars) don't handle as well, are less fuel efficient and take up much more space. The trade-off of course is that trucks can be utilized in far more ways than your standard 4-door sedan.
What's odd is when people spend more money buying a big, fully equipped truck but then never use it for anything but daily driving in the city. They buy the truck to make a statement instead of buying a car that's better suited for "statement" making.
I drive a truck because I choose to drive a truck. No it has nothing to do with making a statement, or the size of my genitalia. (Ask my wife!) Theres very few cars that I can fit and rive comfortably in, and I have no need for a big SUV.
Not according to the New Urbanists over in theUrban Planning Forum. In fact, they claim that no one in an urban area needs, or even should be allowed to own, a personal vehicle other than a bicycle. You can bike, Uber/Lyft or mass transit wherever you need to go and it's really not too bad hand carrying a load of groceries a couple dozen blocks.
I think that's one of the most stupid buys ever, just to buy a truck when you are never going to haul or tow with it. But if you use the flatbed for the deer you just killed, that's ok. If you're just buying a Ford F150 Platinum 4x4 to look good and not use it, I guess that's your style but man is that a waste of @#$%
So why else would you have a truck if you don't use it for the reasons stated?
Back when I didn't know much about trucks, I was really shocked that the Ford F150 was America's best selling vehicle! Is that because many people live in situations like rural America [e.g. KY] where it's better to have a 4x4 truck?
We have a huge truck to pull our camper a few times a year. To most people who don't know we camp, you'd think we didn't need the truck.

Our third car is a 4x4 truck, it only goes maybe 6,000 miles a year, but when I need it I need it. Whether for hauling or towing, rare snow days, or occasional off-roading, neither of the other two can do what it can.
If you live in an apartment or a condo, I can see where you wouldn't need a truck, you can just have any big items you buy delivered. However, if you live in a house with a yard, you'll need a pickup occasionally. I put all sorts of things on the back of mine... bags of mulch, bales of pinestraw, jugs of gas for the lawnmower, etc....
Now what I do see as pointless, is the people who put the giant lift kits and huge mud tires on their trucks. I was behind one at McDonalds a few days ago that was so high the guy driving couldn't even reach his food from the drive up window, he had to pull up and get out.
Q: Why spend $65,000-ish on a Ford 150 Raptor 4x4 when you don't tow or haul?
A: How else do 28 year-old divorced men pick up 18 year old girls at bowling alleys?
Spending $60k on a pickup is probably why they got divorced in the first place.
