All over the country people are facing huge job lose, especially in the south. Just moved back from NC because the job market is horrible and they are killing those children with all the cuts in education. Cheaper doesn't always mean better. Relocation is affecting all of the states, sure some more than others. Everyone is scrambling around trying to make it. Again I went to the south love the weather, love the sights, hate the struggle. If I am going to struggle I will do it here in my home town.
Do folks know that Buffalo is attracting a LOT of artists..I know 5 that left NYC for upstate..why? Cheap rents..nice industrial architecture...and a supportive community. Now we know what happens next....see providence. Becomes hip...professionals move into the hip neighborhoods, and at the same time the money comes in. Now the bad part is often the artists get priced out of the areas they developed...but the city usually undergoes the full reniassance. Providence is an excellent model to look at...that city was a train wreck before buddy cianci (yes i know....but he did support the artists). Now its a great town. Buffalo could very well come back...most of these modern cities and even the large gentrified ones have increasingly zero charachter and a lot of crap chains dominating (manhattan is becoming a high end yuppie shopping mall...). A lot of people miss those kinds of places/cities. It may take a little time...but cities like Buffalo have the intangible...a vibe and a lot of personality. The artists will have an impact....support them!

Actually, Henry Ford liked cheap labor(i.e.-the high Black population). Why do you think he attracted so many Black people to come to Detroit to work? Even posters in the Detroit forum mentioned this was a factor for the car industry. So, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that he wanted to set up shop in Alabama or Georgia.
Actually that isn't really true. In 1914 Henry Ford's company started a program that paid workers $5.00 a day. That was nearly double the wage of his workers. Doesn't sound like much but that's the equivalent of about $100.00 in todays money. The higher wage is what brought people from southern states to Detroit.

I thought it was also due to seeing them as cheaper labor and less likely to unionize. Good information and I stand corrected.
Hi,
I got a very good job offer and I will be moving to Buffalo very soon. People tell me: Oh! you are moving to Buffalo? I am so sorry for you! you could not find any palce worst than this city to live in.
I am not affraid of cold. I want to be positive about my moving decision.
But really, is it that bad?

I came over 40 years ago, married a Buffalo boy, had 2 kids, raised my family here and got 3 college degrees and had my career here..... If you gave me millions, I'd go visit places, but I wouldn't leave. I love it here.
