Ok maybe this will help. Luke 16:22-23 says the beggar went to Abrahams bosom and the rich man lifted up his eyes from where? Hell it says. Now in verse 26 after asking for water to cool his tongue, he learns there is a great gulf and he can not "pass to us that would come from thence". Point is, the rich man could not leave hell to go to Abraham's bosom nor vice versa.
The bible says, "it is appointed of men once to die" then what is next? "then after this, the judgement". Not after this, chastisement before judgement. What happens on judgement? Revelation 20:12-15 shows that hell is delivered up and cast where? into the lake of fire the second death.

Actually it is not as plain as you would think. Yes Luke 16 is quite often used as proof as an eternal hell. But reading it literally, it doesn't actually say its eternal.
But the real problem is Luke 16 is not a literal description. It is a parable. There are many problems if we treat it as a real description of hell. Can those in heaven really talk to those in hell? Would a drop of water really matter if you are being burned in flame?
In fact this is simply a parable, which is filled with symbols. What is the meaning of the "rich man"? The "purple clothing"? The name "Lazarus"? The "table scraps"? "Abraham's Bosom"? These are all symbols. Read these 3 articles:
As for the lake of fire and judgment, you have to understand what the purpose of judgment is. Judgment is for correction, and ultimately it teaches people righteousness. This is a big topic. Fire is used to burn things up. Spiritual fire burns up our works, refines and purifies us, and ultimately saves. More articles for you to read:

It says we are not saved by them (Eph. 2:8, Titus 3:5, etc), but it says they are necessary because faith without works is dead (James 2:14-26). Hebrews 11:6 says "without faith it is impossible to please Him". If faith is dead, it is not there and therefore is not pleasing Him. Grace, faith, and works all go hand in hand.
And it is necessary becaus we are judged by our works (2 Cor. 5:10, Eph. 6:8, Rom. 2:6 and best of all Rev. 20:12-13 and Matt 16:26-27). On the day of judgement we are judged based on what? All these verses say works
I am confused. I believe works is evidenced of your faith but it should NOT be thought of a way to earn your salvation. Does that clear it up?

Now Legoman. I hope you are not preying on other's ignorance? (not that I am saying, you are ignorant Dalton) You know that is out of Dante's inferno. Many lacking in knowledge Christians believe that. The answer is we don't know if it is a literal fire or not. I personally don't believe so
I am sorry but that is reading way in too much in a few verses.
(Matthew 7:24-27) The house represents a religious life, the rain represents divine judgement. Only the house built on the foundation of obedience to God's word stands, which calls for repentance, rejection of salvation by works, and trust in God's grace to save through merciful provision.
Amen...Only a house built with the foundation of The Rock, Jesus, can stand through any storm in life.

We do not do works for brownie points we do them for salvation, because we love God and want to do His will. We need to understand that works include many things, even believing is a work(John 6:29).
I agree we do not do them for our own fame or because we earn these blessings or deserve them
