And please get into food and drinks. I would like to hear the significant and cultural exports/trends of NYC.
LA is definitely the leading cultural exporter (for better or worse) in the US, closely followed by NYC.
-Entertainment - film, television, music, video games.
-Hip-hop started in NYC, but gangster rap was popularized by LA.
-Literary culture - often overlooked and far too often underestimated - Raymond Chandler, James Ellroy, Ray Bradbury, Joan Didion, John Fante, Charles Bukowski, Ross Macdonald, and many more all had a cultural impact.
-Noir culture
-Fashion - High fashion (catwalk stuff) belongs to NYC, but casual fashion trends is dominated by LA (and really California as a whole). Premium denim (designer jeans), swimwear, surfwear, skatewear started in LA too.
-Skate culture was started in LA.
-Surf culture was started in LA/SoCal (via Hawaii).
-Car culture - going back to the 50's and 60's with the hot rods and muscle cars. Lowriders and lowrider culture was formed in LA, as well as the import/tuner car culture, drifting, and street/drag racing. LA/SoCal popularized freeways.
-Gang culture (big and notorious gangs like Bloods, Crips, MS-13, Hells Angels, etc)
-Porn and Playboy is a LA thing.
-Modern theme parks, with Disneyland starting the rise of theme parks and a transition from general amusement parks.
-"Valley Girls" speech, or "Valspeak," surf slang, skate slang have contributed the the American language and lexicon.
Excuse me sirs. Forgive me for my abrupt intrusion into America's greatest Civil War. However, I'm certain that Playboy was founded in Chicago. Hugh Hefner is also from Chicago.
I think LA is very underated when it comes to fashion, LA was actually the 5th Fashion Capital in the world only behind London, NYC, Paris, and Milan, but sadly this year LA dropped to 9th Fashion capital of the world.
major fashion companies based and headquartered in LA are Guess, Forever 21, Bijan, Max Azria, lucky Brand jeans, James *****, Juicy Couture, Kitson, 7 for all mankind, American Apparel, marciano, tilly's, (Volcom, all that skating companies, hurley etc.) etc.
I always got the impression New York only cared about fashion within a few square miles of Manhattan and the trendy part of Brooklyn. Maybe include the Hamptons. Outside of that, New York isn't concerned with fashion, like most of America.
LA, it seems to all over West LA, Santa Monica, Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Echo Park, nicer parts of the valley - in varying styles. Also, the guys in LA are more into fashion than in NY. Women are almost universally into some fashion, but a good measure of it, is if the men are into it (outside of the gay community).
I would be willing to bet people in places like Europe, Asia, and South America associate urban living with their own urban cities that tend to be far more urban than your average American city.
New York is not your average American city. And yes, people around the world do associate New York with urban living. Not just in terms of tall buildings and big crowds, but diversity, culture, vibrancy, etc.
Indian actresses toe-to-toe?? They kill American actresses accept for a couple.
I don't think Indian actresses compare to many of the actual Indian-American women in our own country. India has such color hangups. "Light" and "pretty" aren't always the same thing. The most beautiful Indian women, imo, are usually the tanner ones, but you don't see them cast as often in Bollywood blockbusters.

No, not really.
Why would people associate any city with 'urban living'? That doesnt make sense unless they are actually thinking about moving there, and even then, that would only be if they come from some rural town. A person from Paris or Moscow or Beijing isnt going to necessarily associate NY with urban living because they also live in urban environments and that's what theyre already accustomed to.
Furthermore as far as upscale lifestyle, Malibu beach homes and Beverly Hills mansions and their opluence is far more famous worldwide than NYCs brownstones and even the Upper East Side is nowhere near as famous as Beverly Hills.

True, but the mansion is in the Hollywood Hills - is the magazine run out of LA now or Chicago?
Why would people associate any city with 'urban living'?
Because they do. They see NYC on TV, in movies, in magazines, etc. NYC is probably in the media more than any other city on earth. It by far has the most recognizable skyline in the world. That's why.

I didn't say "urbanity." I said "urban living." Nobody idealizes Moscow's corruption or Beijing's traffic and overcrowding. People do, however, idealize the lifestyle they see in Sex and the City, Gossip Girl, Hitch, etc. and they move to NYC to be a part of that.

Why are you always talking about "upscale lifestyle?" You invariably find a way to drag this into the discussion.
