Here is some very encouraging 'we're not there yet' news about Richland County's business development and recruitment. There really were problems that have been resolved and more problems that are being resolved. It's a new day, and the county is working hard to get the word out.

Wow...I didn't know things were THAT bad in the county. It's good to see things have been changing for the better.

All the more reason to merge the City and the County.. If not totally atleast things such as development services/building permits/Planning... I believe that they tried before but a little thing call Politics got in the way...If the County is doing poorly or has a poor image.. that can reflect on Columbia too. As a resident/business in the City you are also a resident of the County.. so this is an issue.. They need to put on the ballot a merge of the City and the County... but the politicos would likely stop it because they would lose their seats....

I remember how the proposition to merge the municipal police department and the county sheriff's office went (which wasn't all that long ago), so I'd imagine there's not much of an appetite to entertain a quasi-merger of certain functions right now.

I'm more interested in knowing that new people are at the helm with the county and that they have straightened most of the problems out with eyes on fixing the rest than I am a merger.

Governmental consolidation makes so much sense, but goes against the grain of many South Carolinians, for some reason.

Stiff competition with Charleston, Greenville, Raleigh, Greensboro, Asheville, and Fayetteville in the mix also. I could easily see this going to Raleigh with all the college basketball talent in the Triangle but who knows.
