Speaking of…

I guess BDR itself didn’t hit freezing, so congrats. However, pretty much every other costal neighborhood in the state DID, including a weather station just .3 miles in from Fairfield Beach and one just 750 feet from water in Southport (which is more surrounded by land than Stratford). And it’s not just here - even closer to NYC there are stations such as KCTNORWA646 (Rowayton, a mere 500 feet from the water) that also got to 32.

BDR is such a ridiculous microclimate that it’s not informative of the CT coastline. At all (except for maybe places like the Norwalk and Thimble Islands).

When I made my “there should be another southern CT weather station” comment I meant one literally a mile of two inland. I think people would be shocked by the difference in first/ last freeze dates.

So I guess I started the trend of doing it on the car? I’ll post my picture soon!

Also, it’s nice to know the area Northeast of Scranton kept warm with a nice fire right by the weather station…

I wonder why BDL was so warm relative to other CT stations at 36, that is unusual. Was it cloudy there? I remember all the chatter about it's last freeze as well and the thought that it wouldn't be so early because of last night's forecast

Too bad we couldn't make bets at the casino...it would be fun. We could have the hope for freeze bets and the anti-freeze bets.

As far as Bridgeport and how they do/don't represent the rest of coastal Connecticut (maybe Long island too) I don't know:

My guess (based on 35 years of living along the CT coast) is that western FFC is might be the coldest coastal area for the 4 coastal counties. The huge urban heat island of the NYC maybe offsets that to a large degree. I only fell to 37 F (and NO frost)..Bridgeport fell to 37 F...Tweed only fell to 39 F. Once much west of Bridgeport, the coast line is much more hilly and rocky. I think the hilly terrain that goes almost to the coast in FFC does not allow the milder ocean in to get very far inland. Locally, I normally never see a freeze after mid April here in the Westbrook - Saybrook area on the coast.

Another interesting note I saw this morning, looking at NWS Bridgeport (New Haven data does not go back that far)....since 1948 (76 years) there has only been a freeze in May once in 1966.

It also matters where the freeze/frost is pointed from what I understand.

Sometimes, it seems when we get a strong NW flow of cold air, locations more westerly get colder that locations more easterly it seems. This shot of cold air was more on a westerly wind, and less of a northerly flow from what I can tell. So points west might have been colder. I only fell to 37 F, and NWS Bridgeport normally is warmer than me. In terms of normal cold shots and the prevailing winds that often come with them, examine this:

This is a map of the mean January temps in CT/RI/and SE mass using only NWS stations. It seems likely that
the ocean without doubt keeps mean temps up in the most oceanic controlled climates (Nantucket - 33 F, Westley 32 F...New London 31 F...etc). Generally, if you connected using iso lines, the temps warm from a NW to SE direction. However, look across points well inland in CT. That 28 F you see is Meriden, and just about due east the 29 F is Norwich, and the 30 F is in far western Kingston, RI. Maybe, points east are more distant from the source of the cool air flow (NW winds) ?. Just a guess though.

Lows this morning

I circled all the near freezing or below freezing temps at the coast. BDR's low was 36 or 37, the runway must of been freshly paved.

I would be suspect of non-NWS stations
