How rude of that woman to criticize a mother for speaking in her native tongue! This country is a melting pot of cultures, races, religions, and languages. That lady has forgotten what it means to be an American.
Apparently to some being American means speaking English, wearing Wal-Mart clothes, waving the Confederate flag and whistling Dixie.
Her family has lived in Northern New Mexico and the San Luis Valley for more than two hundred years.
My family has been here four generations on my father's side- but desperate people have agendas and want everyone to see all brown people as illegals.
If that lady would have said something like that to my mother I would have laughed, told her to mind her own business and continued talking in Spanish. I think my mother would have laughed too. Vieja loca!

Karma being what it is "Miss. Anne" will likely end her days in a care home staffed by nurses, aides and others who speak Patois, Tagalog, Spanish, Niger-Congo and a few other languages. They will speak among themselves in *their* language as they go about their work largely ignoring the woman and or her rants about English speaking.
Has anyone else noticed how half the posters who profess such an undying love for the English language can't manage to crank out a grammatically correct paragraph in English? If they've even heard of an indirect object, they can't begin to identify one. And if you asked them to point out the conjunction in a sentence, they'd have to quickly google 'what is a conjunction?' first in order to pretend that they knew what one was all along.
Not that I'm complaining, mind you. Personally, I think immigrants should learn English. But I think so for their own good, not because my fragile feelings get hurt if I'm within earshot of a private conversation spoken in another language. In a similar vein, if native speakers of English are too lazy and/or stupid to learn the proper usage of their mother tongue, it's no skin off my nose.
Yes, exactly. If you're going to insist that these "other people" speak only English when they speak to each other, then I expect to hear precise, perfect English coming from your lips. No slang, no regionalisms - perfect English.
Which, by the way, the white lady in the video did not speak it at all. She was barely intelligible.

Then they are wrong to. I'm not a hypocrite and expect our own citizens to behave differently then I would expect foreigners to do in our own country. I do not expect tourists to know our language either but loudness should not be tolerated from anyone. Two wrongs don't make a right which is what you seem to be implying here.
So do you whisper when you are in public? You seem very bitter and sound like a dictator.
As long as people aren't hurting others, let people do as they please.
i know exactly how you feel. It kind of burns me when i go to tahlequah and the old folks are at the town square speaking cherokee. This is america, if they want to speak cherokee in public let him go back where they came from!

It isn't about foreigners here on vacation. It's about people who have lived here for years and either don't learn English or refuse to speak it unless they have to. It is rude when you are in a place of business and just about every Hispanic there is speaking Spanish and loudly. That's not butting into their private conversations. You can't escape hearing it. You call that a private conversation? I don't think so!

And how do you know how many years someone has been here? Are you asking to see their papers? How do you know they aren't visiting family here in the states? Or are recent arrivals? You don't know and it's none of your damn business!

I feel bad for these people. They were very offended, I would have felt the same way when I was younger. Now it that would have happened to me now days I would have laughed in her face
That woman is nuts talking about Russians, Nazis and all that nonsense. Maybe she has dementia and she thinks we are in the 1940's.
I definitely think something was wrong with her mentally, she didn't make sense.
