EDIT which by the way is completely off topic for this thread. There is no confusion about consent. It was a dare and he assaulted her.
You are making it simpler than it is, but that is off topic indeed. You cannot just pull out "assault" out of context of that group, who knows what clues and crushes were brewing there before the "assault". As far as we know, the kid might have written love poems before he was challenged to a "dare" by his less than sentimental friends.

Who cares if he wrote poems? He grabbed her by the shirt and stuck his tongue in her mouth without her consent.
You are missing some very significant social antenna it appears.

Actually it is that simple, because there is a legal definition for assault, and if he was arrested or charged, then clearly authorities thought what he did fit the definition. Now his punishment will depend on a lot of things, if charges stick. The definition is clear but the punishment will vary greatly depending on the circumstance. The sentence is when other factors are taken into consideration, not defining the act itself.

You are ignoring female mating behavior where "no" does really mean "yes" for some and "no" for others, where grabbing shirt and everything that is under it without verbal consent is rather a norm.
Why don't we step up women liberation? Every guy "grabbing" woman shirts and body parts without advanced and implicit permission, documented if possible, goes to a re-education camp? Why husbands are so presumptuous when they kiss their wives? This male chauvinism must stop.

Yes, this male chauvinism must stop.
If you think no means anything other than no, you're at risk of jail time in the event you get close enough to a woman to be confused.
The absence of yes also means no.
If grabbing someone without consent is your norm, I hope you get caught and charged.
Bottom line, I'm willing to be that even those posters that think this punishment went too far don't in any way share your crazy views.
This world is getting ridiculous.. Her parents are probably some stuck up rich snobs. This is most definitely not second degree assault.. My god.. I need to go live on my own secluded island away from people like this.
No kidding! Yes, he should get punished for the prank but second degree assault? No way! This is such a sensitive generation. I'm glad we are forced to homeschool. Seems like the best option time and time again.
I'd be worried about the assault record my son would have after drawing an action figure, accidentally brushing up against a girl, or raising his voice.
We were pranked in school. Yes, sucked, but we got over it and the kids who did it got disciplined but the police weren't called.

Thank God he wasn't making a clock!!
Did you even bother to read this thread or the legal definition of assault?
If you're worried about your child being charged with assault because they can't control themselves then please do homeschool.
Grabbing someone and jamming your tongue in their mouth is not a "prank", it's absolutely (legally) assault. He was charged as a juvenile and will be able to defend against it and he may be successful.

You mix cause and effect. Cause: females use "no" for "yes" as they did for as long as language exists. Effect: male must "analyze" non verbal clues to decide what "no" is supposed to mean in each case. Women are programmed to avoid guys who take "no" for "no", some levels of "in spite of no" persistence is a must have, it is a part of a mating game for eons.
So, it is only reasonable to aggressively re-engineer female behavior first. No means no, yes means yes, please sign a consent form each time romantic opportunity knocks on a door to be on the safe side.
As a liberated, from the atavisms of biology and traditional culture, woman, you will make a good template to re-engineer the future generations of women provided you will change your mind on "cues". No cues allowed, it is yes or no world from now on, digitally documented when possible.
